Expert Picks
The Cards are starting lefty Steven Matz today. Despite getting off to a bit of an inconsistent start to the season, the Cardinals are still 3-1 in Matz' starts. The Royals struggle against left-handed pitching, and will still have to face a decent St. Louis bullpen. KC’s Zach Greinke might have better stats, but the Royals’ cold bats should offset any starting pitcher advantages. The Royals bullpen is one of the worst in the league and should provide the Cardinals an abundance of opportunities to put up runs if they are unable to do so on Greinke. I’ll lay the juice for the Cards on the money line.
Kansas City was swept at home over the weekend by the Yankees and managed only six runs in the three-game series. The Royals are batting just .193 with runners in scoring position this year (27th in majors) and slugging .234 in scoring situations, which is last in the majors. Zack Greinke has been solid on the mound so he'll probably keep this close, but we have to lean the Cardinals at home. They start Steven Matz and KC has struggled against southpaws (1-3 record, .217 average, one HR).
The Royals traveled from Kansas City last night for this 12:15 local time game while the Cardinals were at home. Zack Greinke has been very good so far this season but the Royals bullpen behind him is dead last in the league in wOBA. Steven Matz has been decent but he will be facing the 6th worst team in the league in wOBA against lefties. The Cardinals also have the 6th best bullpen behind him. The Cardinals gave key players like Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado days off over the weekend so I would expect them to be in the lineup today. Take the Cards at home.
