Today's top picks: Warriors to cover against Nuggets among best bets, plus more NBA playoffs, USFL and UFC Fight Night picks for Saturday, April 16

SportsLine's proven experts share their favorite bets on the Early Edge podcast for Saturday, April 16

By@SportsLineUpdated: Apr 16, 2022 3:28PM UTC . 4 min read

Allan Bell is joined by Mike McClure, Alex "PropStarz" Selesnick, Andrew Gombas and Micah Roberts on the Early Edge podcast, powered by SportsLine. Get highlighted plays for USFL, NBA playoffs, UFC Fight Night, NHL and MLB for Saturday, April 16, and you can stream the show live every morning on the SportsLine YouTube page.

Mike advises bettors to pay close attention to weather reports for Saturday's MLB games, and PropStarz gives a rundown of what should be a fascinating NBA playoffs weekend. Allan then kicks off the picks with two SportsLine Plays of the Day.

The first is on the USFL, which kicks off in Birmingham, Ala., with the New Jersey Generals vs. Birmingham Stallions (7:30 p.m. ET). SportsLine pro football expert R.J. White is backing the Stallions -3 in the opener, as New Jersey lost its starting QB to injury and White rates the Generals as the worst team in the new league.

In the NHL, the pick is Over 5.5 goals in the Blackhawks vs. Predators matchup (12:30 p.m. ET). There have been an average of 8.6 goals in Chicago's last three games, and Nashville will be eager to bounce back from a shutout loss to the Oilers.

Mike has an MLB pick, going with the Red Sox -120 against the Twins (4:10 p.m. ET). Minnesota star outfielder Byron Buxton was injured Friday and could be out for a while, and the weather should lead to more home runs in Boston. McClure expects the Red Sox to get their first home victory.

Andrew has three picks on UFC Fight Night, which features a main event between welterweights Vicente Luque and Belal Muhammad. Luque won the previous meeting between the fighter with a KO in 70 seconds, and Gombas expects him to get it done again at -160. "I'm not sure it will come that easy again," he says, "but I do think Vicente Luque should be a wider favorite here." Andrew predicts Luque to win by submission .

His second pick is on the Trey Ogden-Jordan Leavitt lightweight preliminary bout, and he is taking Ogden -143 in his UFC debut. There should be a lot of grappling, but Gombas says Leavitt is "pretty one-dimensional" while Ogden has more size, is a better striker and should be a bigger favorite. Andrew is also going with Miguel Baeza -160 over Andre Fialho in a welterweight fight on the main card.

Micah has three NBA picks, and he is going with the Warriors -6.5 against the Nuggets (8:30 p.m. ET), Over 209 points in the Mavericks vs. Jazz matchup (1 p.m. ET) and the Grizzlies -6.5 against the Timberwolves (3:30 p.m. ET). The Grizzlies are rested and ready to get back to work, and they "do everything great," Roberts says. He expects Memphis to win pretty handily.

PropStarz wraps things up with his NBA prop picks, and he is taking Minnesota's D'Angelo Russell Over 18.5 points (-125) against the Grizzlies. Russell scored 29 points on Tuesday against the Clippers and averages more than 23 points over 17 career games against Memphis.

Alex is fading Dallas center Dwight Powell, taking him to go Under 20.5 points/rebounds/assists (-125) against the Jazz in what should be a slow-paced game.
