Today's top picks: UCLA-Arizona among best bets, plus more college basketball, golf, NBA and 2002 Super Bowl predictions for Thursday

SportsLine's proven experts share their favorite bets on the Early Edge podcast for Thursday, Feb. 3

By@SportsLineUpdated: Feb 03, 2022 4:48PM UTC . 5 min read

Host Jonathan Coachman is joined by betting experts Larry Hartstein, Mike McClure, Justin Perri and Allan Bell on the Early Edge podcast, powered by SportsLine. Get highlighted plays for the NBA, college basketball, golf and Super Bowl LVI for Thursday, Feb. 3, and you can stream the show live every morning on the SportsLine YouTube page.

Larry chimes in with an early nugget on the 2022 Super Bowl, saying that if you like the Bengals +4.5 against the Rams (Feb. 13, 6:30 p.m. ET), you should also play them on the money line (+170). An underdog of less than 6 points in the Super Bowl has won every time it has covered the spread.

Mike wants to talk about golf, with the Pebble Beach AT&T Pro-Am set to start Thursday. Defending champion Daniel Berger (back) and young star Will Zalatoris (COVID) had to withdraw, so reigning FedEx Cup champ Patrick Cantlay's odds improved to 6-1 to win the tournament. "This number that we're seeing on him is basically like Tiger Woods in his prime, in a non-major or a non-stacked field," McClure says. But Mike points out that Cantlay begins on the Monterey course, the easiest of the three, so if he doesn't have a strong day, there will be excellent live betting opportunities.

Justin passes on some college basketball knowledge, dispelling the notion that players might come out sluggish in the early games. People think these games are more likely to go Under the total, but Perri says the last 12 early games on weekdays are 9-3 on the Over. "It might actually be that defenses are playing worse early rather than offenses," he says. He likes the Tennessee Tech-Morehead State matchup (2 p.m. ET) for a possible Under early Thursday, with 11 of the past 12 meetings going Under.

Allan points out the importance of having a plan when betting the Super Bowl and not waiting until the last minute to put in your bets, as the volume can create problems getting them in. He also says you need to get them in early so you get the best numbers. That's especially true for 2022 Super Bowl props with those numbers expected to skyrocket next week.

Larry hasn't made up his mind on a few Super Bowl prop picks, including the team that scores last to win the game (-210). It has hit eight straight times, is on a 23-3 run and is 41-14 overall. He's also eyeing the first-quarter total (7.5 points), with the Bengals 12-6-2 and L.A. 14-6 on the first-quarter Under this season.

The Coach has two SportsLine Plays of the Day, with the first Arizona -6 in the rematch with UCLA (8 p.m. ET). The simulations have the Wildcats covering 63 percent of the time. The model also likes the Raptors -3 at home against the Bulls (7:30 p.m. ET).

Mike's college basketball picks include Georgetown +5.5 at home against St. John's (6 p.m. ET). "Decent offense, not good defense, at all, on either side," McClure says. Georgetown has under-performed, but "this is the time where we want to back them," Mike says. "We want to back them at home, where they play better, we want to back them as underdogs."

Perri has three college basketball plays that he loves, going with Troy +6.5 against Georgia State (7 p.m. ET). His model has this spread closer to 2.5, so he is going with the edge. He also likes Youngstown State -12.5 against IUPUI (7 p.m. ET) and Denver -1.5 against North Dakota (8 p.m. ET).

Allan is all over the Super Bowl, but first he has a play for Thursday college basketball as well. He likes Washington State -3 against Stanford (9 p.m. ET), with the Cougars covering 60 percent of the time on the road this season.

On the Bengals vs. Rams 2022 Super Bowl, Bell has some prop plays, the first being Los Angeles WR Odell Beckham's longest reception Over 23.5 yards (-110). The Bengals are going to be all over Cooper Kupp, and "it's the Super Bowl," Bell says, "You know OBJ is going to be showing out." He also is taking Bengals QB Joe Burrow Over 36.5 pass attempts (-108) and Over 6.5 total punts in the game (-120) to provide some coverage if the offenses fizzle out.

The Maestro wraps things up, and he also has a couple of Super Bowl LVI props. One is a parlay at FanDuel, as Larry is taking Kupp over 80 receiving yards and Tyler Boyd over 25 at odds of -116. Hartstein also expects both coaches to play it safe at the start and is taking a run as the first play from scrimmage, listed at -130 at Caesars Sportsbook. Allan jumps in with a Showdown challenge, going with anything other than a run (+100) before Mike gets in on the action and challenges Hartstein, as well.
