Stefon Diggs 2023 NFL season props, odds: Another big year projected for Bills Pro Bowl receiver, at practice for first time Wednesday amid trade rumors
Stefon Diggs apparently isn't very happy with the Buffalo Bills.
Every offseason it seems, at least one star wideout is unhappy with his current team and tries to force his way out. Both Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill got their trade wishes last offseason, and this year that receiver could be Buffalo's Stefon Diggs. There was some confusion about whether the three-time Pro Bowler was even at the team's mandatory minicamp early this week, but he did practice with the team Wednesday. So is that distraction finished for 2023? We break down some Diggs season props.
Diggs' unhappiness stemmed from Buffalo's 27-10 home upset loss in the snow against Cincinnati in January's Divisional Round game. Diggs clearly was peeved at quarterback Josh Allen for a lack of usage in the game – at one point, Diggs did appear wide open in the end zone, but Allen didn't see him. Diggs finished with a quiet four catches for 35 yards. His numbers were down across the board in the second half of the regular season after a monster first half.Â
Three years ago, Diggs effectively tweeted his way out of Minnesota, which traded him to Buffalo. Some speculated he might be trying to do the same thing by reporting to minicamp and then abruptly leaving. The issue was not related to Diggs' contract, per NFL Media. Diggs is scheduled to make a base salary of $18.5 million this year, but his average annual salary of $24 million is sixth in the league.
Coach Sean McDermott had told reporters that he was "very concerned" about the situation before Diggs was on the field Wednesday. I'm presuming both will address the media after. Diggs' agent, Adisa Bakari, said his client has been in Buffalo since Monday morning, took a physical, met with McDermott and GM Brandon Beane and "will be there for the entirety of the minicamp." That wasn't true for Tuesday's session.
Allen said after Tuesday's practice that the issue was not related to football and that he did not think there is a personality conflict between him and Diggs, but that there are things that could have gone better last year, including "getting him the ball or getting more involved in the game plan."
Diggs posted an Instagram story on Tuesday night that read, among other things: "I just be letting people cap. If them lies help you sleep better tell em big dog." He signed a four-year, $96 million extension last offseason with $70 million guaranteed, the third most all time for a wide receiver. Trading Diggs would save the Bills $1.6 million in cap space this year, but leave them with $31.1 million in dead money next season. And the team just gave him a $16 million bonus in March.
Buffalo is all in to win Super Bowl 58 and among the favorites to do so, and there's no universe where it gets better by trading Diggs. Behind Diggs, the wide receiver room contains Gabe Davis, Trent Sherfield, Deonte Harty and Khalil Shakir. That's not great.
At DraftKings, Diggs is set at over/under 1,125.5 receiving yards and 8.5 touchdown catches. The 29-year-old has easily topped that yardage in all three Bills seasons and finished with 1,429 last year to go with a career-high 11 TD catches. The lone Buffalo season he didn't top 8.5 TD catches was in 2020, when he finished with eight.
To lead the NFL in receiving yards, Diggs is +1800. He did so in 2020 with 1,535. That's the only time a Bills player has finished first in that category.Â
That Diggs has at least eight 100-yard games is yes-only at +200 (he had seven in 2022) and that he has a 200-yard game is +350. His career-high yardage game is 182. The last Buffalo player with a 200-yard regular-season game was Lee Evans in 2006, but Davis had 201 in the Divisional Round loss in Kansas City following the 2021 season.
Buffalo opens on Sept. 11 in the Meadowlands against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets, who are +1.5. The SportsLine Projection Model has Diggs finishing with 5.0 catches for 62 yards and 0.36 TDs.
