Rays vs. Diamondbacks Wednesday MLB odds, props: Arizona lone team in majors yet to be shut out this season

After the Toronto Blue Jays were blanked at home by the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, now every MLB team but one has been shutout at least twice this season. The lone club that has scored in each game so far is the NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks, who host the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. The D'backs are +135 underdogs at Caesars Sportsbook and have an over/under team total of 3.5 runs.

Tampa Bay and Arizona were both 1998 expansion teams, and they could certainly meet in the Fall Classic for the first time this October. The Rays have the best record in baseball and the Diamondbacks sport the second-best mark in the NL. On the Caesars World Series exacta odds, Tampa Bay beating Arizona is +8000 and vice versa is +10000. The +1700 favorite is Braves over Rays.

The Diamondbacks won the first game of the series in the desert on Tuesday, 8-4. It was their franchise-record 80th straight game without being shut out to start the season (previous mark: 78 games from April 1-June 27, 2013). It's the majors' ninth-longest streak since 1998:

• 2000 Reds: 163 games without being shut out (had to play 163rd game to decide division)
• 2001 Rangers: 160 games
• 2019 Yankees 138 games
• 2007 Orioles: 133 games
• 2008 Rangers: 96 games
• 2012 Tigers: 96 games

• 2017 Nationals: 86 games

Arizona's 54 straight games with an extra-base hit is also tied for the longest active streak in the majors with the Angels. Christian Walker had a solo homer in Tuesday's win and during an 11-game hitting streak is batting 18-for-43 (.419) with three homers, six doubles and 12 RBI. Ketel Marte has reached base safely in 20 straight games, the longest active streak in the majors. Rookie Corbin Carroll is the -450 heavy favorite for the NL Rookie of the Year Award and ranks fourth in MLB in WAR at 3.8.

The Rays will start right-hander Zach Eflin on Wednesday. Tampa Bay typically doesn't spend big free agent money, so it was quite notable when it signed Eflin to a three-year, $40 million deal this winter. Eflin had been solid but not spectacular in his career with the Phillies. The Rays know how to get more out of pitchers than any other team, though, and Eflin is on pace to have a career season at 9-3 with a 3.35 ERA, although he's 1-3 with a 5.08 ERA on the road. Walker is 2-for-4 against him with a double and Marte 2-for-5 with a double. In four career appearances (three starts) against Arizona, Eflin is 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA.

It's struggling Zach Davies (1-4, 7.82) for the DBacks, and this might be the last chance he has to save his spot in the rotation. Davies has lost three straight starts and allowed a whopping 21 runs over 10.2 innings in those outings. Davies' lone start vs. Tampa Bay came in 2017 while with Milwaukee, and he blanked the Rays over seven innings.
