Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves (-135, 9): 7:15 p.m. ET
The Phillies and Braves square off in the first of their three-game weekend series with Atlanta hoping to make up some ground in the NL East. Philadelphia enters Friday trailing the New York Mets by a half game in the division, while the Braves are 10 back.Â
Atlanta is looking for a big effort from Bryce Elder. Elder got lit up in his last two starts, allowing 17 hits and nine runs in 8.2 innings. The Braves haven't been a profitable bet with Elder on the mound lately, going 1-5 in his last six starts.Â
Mick Abel gets the call for Philadelphia. The 23-year-old right-hander has been hit or miss this season. Abel allowed one run or less in three starts, but a total of seven runs in the other two.Â
Chicago Cubs at Houston Astros (-110, 8.5): 8:10 p.m. ET
The Cubs won the final two games of their series against St. Louis by a combined score of 11-0. The consecutive shutouts were a direct contrast from Chicago's prior six games where they gave up a total of 54 runs.
Cade Horton will attempt to keep it going for the Cubs. The 23-year-old is coming off his worst outing of the season where he allowed six runs in 4.2 innings against Seattle, although Chicago came back to win the game, 10-7.Â
The Astros counter with Brandon Walter. Walter is coming off a poor performance against the Angels, giving up nine hits and seven runs over six innings. However, Walter was much more effective in his other three starts this season, allowing just three runs in 17.2 innings of work.Â
