2023 NFL odds, props, trends: Will there be both unbeaten and winless teams for first time in regular-season history? Bettors think so
Could there be winless and unbeaten teams in the NFL this season? It would be historic.
The NFL's 17-game regular-season schedule has only been in effect for two years and no team has come close to either finishing with an unbeaten or winless record. The most wins by any team over those two seasons was 14 by the Chiefs and Eagles in 2022, and the most losses were the 14 by the Bears last year and Jaguars in '22. Bettors at BetMGM are heavily backing at least one team to go 17-0 and another to finish 0-17 this coming season. No modern-era NFL season has featured both an unbeaten and winless club.
That any team finishes 17-0 is +1000 with No at -2500, but 93% of the money has come in on Yes. The 2007 New England Patriots were the only club to finish 16-0, but of course were upset in that season's Super Bowl by the New York Giants. The 1972 Miami Dolphins finished 14-0 in the regular season and would go on to win the Super Bowl.
The highest Over/Under win total this season,11.5, belongs to Kansas City (+750 at DraftKings to finish with most wins), Cincinnati (+750) and San Francisco (+800). The Bengals host the Chiefs in Week 17, so one of those clubs will not finish 17-0. Cincinnati also visits the 49ers in Week 8.
That any team finishes 0-17 is +1000 with No at -2500, and 95% of the bets are on Yes. The 2017 Cleveland Browns and 2008 Detroit Lions both went 0-16. The longest active losing streak in the NFL is 10 straight by the Bears, but they got much better this offseason and are even Week 1 home favorites vs. Green Bay.
The lowest Over/Under win total at 4.5 belongs to Arizona, which is a clear-cut +225 favorite at BetMGM to finish with the fewest victories in the league. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, now without Tom Brady, are next at +850. The Cardinals will likely open the season without injured star quarterback Kyler Murray (torn ACL), lost future Hall of Fame defensive end JJ Watt to retirement, and have an entirely new front office and coaching staff.
The Cardinals are not currently projected to be favored in a single game. At BetMGM, Arizona is taking the most tickets (34%) and money (58.6%) to finish with the fewest wins. The Cardinals were 4-13 last year under now-former coach Kliff Kingsbury, tying the franchise record for losses.Â
