2023 U.S. Open golf odds: Phil Mickelson massive longshot to complete career Grand Slam, favored to miss cut at Los Angeles Country Club

A U.S. Open win is the only accolade missing from Phil Mickelson's resume.

The 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club was already chock full of storylines with the recent news of the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV Tour merger coming after this season (if Congress allows it). The LIV Tour potentially couldn't have gotten off the ground if it hadn't lured superstar Phil Mickelson with a $200 million guarantee. The only thing missing from the World Golf Hall of Famer's career resume is a U.S. Open title, and he's a +21000 longshot at FanDuel to complete the career Grand Slam.

Mickelson has finished second in the U.S. Open a record six times, last in 2013 at Marion. That was also the year he won the third leg of the Slam, the British Open, for his fifth major title.

His last major championship win came at the 2021 PGA Championship in South Carolina. He was 50 years, 11 months and 7 days old then, the oldest-ever major winner. Mickelson turns 53 on Friday. He finished tied for second this year at the Masters, the oldest ever runner-up at that major, and then finished T58 at the PGA Championship, his 100th career major cut made, the third-most ever. Jack Nicklaus holds the record with 132.

Mickelson is a second favorite to miss the cut this week in Los Angeles at -176, and only Michael Thorbjornsen has shorter odds of the FanDuel options at -192. To make the cut, Mickelson is +122. Only Thorbjornsen has longer odds at +132.

For a top-10 finish, Mickelson is +950. His last T10 in the tournament was his last runner-up in 2013. He hasn't cracked the top 25 since, finishing T52 or worse in each of his last seven U.S. Opens. He's missed the cut in two of the past three years. This will be the ninth time Mickelson tries for the career Grand Slam. Only five have golfers have won it:

    1. Gene Sarazen, 1935
    2. Ben Hogan, 1953
    3. Gary Player, 1965
    4. Jack Nicklaus, 1966
    5. Tiger Woods, 2000

Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth are both one leg shy. Both have won the U.S. Open. Rory needs the Masters and Spieth the PGA Championship so they can't join the club until 2024 at the earliest.

There are three southpaws in the field, and Mickelson is +125 to be the top finisher among them, behind Brian Harman (-120) and ahead of Hank Leboida (+470). Mickelson is +7500 to be the top American finisher.

To finish tops among the LIV golfers, Mickelson is +2200. Reining PGA Championship winner and two-time U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka is the +200 favorite there. Mickelson is the +140 favorite as the top Senior player (50 and over) ahead of Padraig Harrington (+175) and Stewart Cink (+210), neither of whom have won a U.S. Open.

Mickelson plays with Harrington and Keegan Bradley the first two rounds, with that trio teeing off at 3:59 p.m. ET on the 10th hole Thursday. The last major championship played in the Los Angeles area was the 1995 PGA Championship, held at The Riviera Country Club, the host venue of The Genesis Invitational. Mickelson has won the regular Tour event at Riviera twice and finished runner-up twice.

Because the 2023 U.S. Open is on the West Coast, that means prime-time TV golf this weekend. Below are tee times in ET.
