I realize that LSU's defense is bad (allowing 32.3 points per game). But does Auburn have the offense to take advantage of it? I say no. Auburn ranks 13th in total yards per game (358.2) in the SEC. Meanwhile Jayden Daniels and the LSU offense are not afraid to keep piling on points. No cover is out of reach for this offense.
LSU-11 - Last week the LSU Tigers beat the Missouri Tigers, this week they get the Auburn Tigers. LSU's offense continues to get better each week. Over the past three games the LSU Tigers have averaged 6 yards per rush or more while the passing game has averaged 10 yard or more per pass. LSU's defense gets a break with Auburn, who averaged 29.6 points per game and 5.5 yards per play. LSU'S last three opponents, Missouri, Old Miss and Arkansas average 33, 41, 31 respectfully.
LSU had no business covering at Mizzou last week (sigh), and has no business being favored by double-digits against any conference foe. Auburn runs the ball 63% of the time (highest rate in SEC, 7th nationally). But even though the Tigers are one-dimensional, they do have success: they averaged 5.1 yards/carry vs. Georgia, which hasn’t allowed any FBS opponent to average more than 3.3 yards/rush. Auburn can slow down the game and keep Jayden Daniels off the field. Speaking of Daniels -- he got pretty banged up in Columbia. Not sure how much LSU's defense can rely on him to bail them out. Models have LSU closer to a 8 to 9-point favorite... Warrrrr Eagle!
In last year's game, Auburn had a 17-0 lead, but they allowed a fumble return touchdown and lost to LSU 21-17 despite outgaining them 438-270. LSU is a tired team, having played their seventh straight contest and fourth consecutive game against an SEC foe. The last three games were high-scoring close affairs. Auburn is fresh off a bye and confident after a close loss to Georgia two weeks ago. Although Auburn has struggled to pass the ball, LSU's young secondary has allowed an average of 283 passing yards per game. Revenge cover!
It’s easy to think that LSU’s porous defense will lead to points, but that’s not how Auburn coach Hugh Freeze will approach this. He knows that his offense can move methodically down the field due to a multi-dimensional rushing attack, and is well-aware of how dangerous LSU’s offense can be. LSU might get into the low 30s, but this won’t be a point-per-minute shootout like previous games.
