Early in the season big numbers ATS can be very tricky to evaluate. USC should no doubt be able to pour it on early and often against San Jose State. The worry is defensively giving up two to three touchdowns. To high of a number here even with last year’s Heisman winner Caleb Williams under center.
USC boasts a returning Heisman winning QB and offensive mastermind Lincoln Riley, yet the Trojans offense isn't the focal point this season. All offseason the defense has taken the blame for 2022 and heard over and over how soft they are. I think they take some frustrations out Saturday and while USC will light up the scoreboard, Caleb Williams should be pulled by the 4th and the Trojans' opponent then becomes the clock. Fight On.
This is a big number for USC to be laying, a number they would have covered just twice last season in wins over Rice and Colorado. USC lost their final two games last season, but they bring back 16 starters from last season. But I like San Jose State’s offense to score enough to cover behind QB Chevan Cordeiro who has four starting offensive linemen returning. Will the Spartans win? I doubt it, but they’ll score. I took all the points with San Jose State.
Listen, I think USC and Caleb Williams will be serious threats to win the Pac-12 and reach the College Football Playoff. That said, I watched this team last year, and there's no way that defense has improved enough in one offseason to trust it as a 30+ point favorite.
We know USC is going to be VERY good led by the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Caleb Williams. But it's Week 0 and how much will he actually play if and when the Trojans get a comfortable lead? San Jose State QB Chevan Cordeiro is no slouch (23 TDs, 6 INTs in 2022) and worst case, should lead a few scoring drives in the second half against USC backups that should ensure a backdoor cover for the Spartans.
No. 6 USC's quest to make the College Football Playoff will kickoff Saturday night in Los Angeles against a San Jose State offense that is going to be more potent than the public realizes. The Trojans defense struggled with basic tackling last season and its turnover luck will come to an end this season. Take the potent SJSU Spartans in what will be a shootout.
