BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP -- These teams managed to score 67 points combined in their first meeting and that was amid a flurry of late scoring after a somewhat sluggish start. The Sooners are vastly improved since that contest and the Cyclones have improved down the stretch as well. Iowa State's preferred deliberate style will be needed if the Cyclones are to complete the sweep, but this total still feels low for 60 minutes between potent clubs.
WIth the spread under a touchdown, Oklahoma is the right side in this Big 12 championship showdown. It's tough to pick a 13-point swing from a regular-season meeting two months later, but rare is it for college football teams to beat an opponent twice in a season. And what's been clear from the Sooners since late October is that their defense has seen a significant turnaround at the same time they have gotten some key players eligible. I would not take this any higher than -6, and there are some -5 out there you should seek out, but this rematch and the Big 12 title should once again belong to Oklahoma.
Iowa State edged out Oklahoma 37-30 earlier this season, and it was no fluke. If you watched the game, or pore over the box score, you see that the two teams were equal in just about every area. But it's going to be more difficult this time. Beating Lincoln Riley and Oklahoma once is tough, but twice in the same season? When that Sooners team has a young QB who has improved as the year has gone along? When the Sooners offense finally found a running back, and when its defense got its best player back? The rematch goes to Boomer Sooner.
Both of these offenses have been playing well, but don’t expect this to be a shootout. This feels more like a 30-21-type game, so stick with the Under.
The dirty little secret about Oklahoma is that its defense has been playing well over the last month-plus. Is that enough for the Sooners to win their sixth straight Big 12 championship? Absolutely ... by at least a touchdown.
