A recent win at Kansas might suggest that BYU no longer has anything to fear on the dangerous Big 12 trail. Moreover, the Cougs already beat ISU handily at Provo on January 16. Still, the home edge is considerable in this league; look no further than the Cyclones, yet to lose at this season at Hilton Coliseum, where most of the Big 12 contenders (including top-ranked Houston) have already fallen. ISU also looks a real go-with right now (10-2 SU, 9-2-1 vs. line last 12), as TJ Otzelberger continues to get plenty of mileage from a marvelously-balanced offense featuring six scoring between 8-14 ppg. The revenge angle is another plus for the Cyclones. Play Iowa State
The Cyclones are 17-0 at home, but this is too many points. BYU likely won't make 13 3-pointers like it did in the first meeting, an 87-72 Cougars' win in Provo. But BYU ranks second in the nation in 3-pointers made (11.3 per game) for a reason. And that's the best way to attack Iowa State's vaunted defense. The Cougars just ended Kansas' 19-game home win streak, though the Jayhawks were missing their leading scorer. Still, it shows this BYU team can compete in tough environments.
Iowa State's defense got absolutely torched by a lights-out shooting performance from BYU when these two teams played back on Jan. 16 in Provo. I do not expect the rims, or the environment, to be as friendly in Hilton Coliseum, where Iowa State is 17-0 on the season so far. BYU is certainly riding high with wins over Baylor, Kansas and TCU in the last two weeks, but I think Ames is the perfect spot for some offensive regression.
