Yankees MLB futures odds essentially unchanged with Gary Sanchez for Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa trade; New York out of Carlos Correa market
The New York Yankees had been the betting favorites to sign Astros All-Star free-agent shortstop Carlos Correa, but they are now out of that market after acquiring shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa, third baseman and former AL MVP Josh Donaldson and catcher Ben Rortvedt in exchange for catcher Gary Sanchez and infielder Gio Urshela. The SportsLine Projection Model barely saw a change to the New York's season outlook, but the Twins got worse (see below).
Kiner-Falefa was actually traded from the Texas Rangers to the Twins on Saturday as Texas had signed another big-ticket free-agent shortstop in Corey Seager before the lockout. Last season, Kiner-Falefa posted a .972 fielding percentage at the position, leading MLB shortstops in total chances (669), assists (436) and double plays turned (98). Earlier Sunday, Yanks manager Aaron Boone had declared that Gio Urshela was the team's starting shortstop but no one really believed New York would open the season with that arrangement.
Donaldson is obviously the big name, a three-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger Award winner and 2015 AL MVP. Last year, Donaldson hit .247 with 26 homers and 72 RBIs in 135 games with the Twins. At 36, he's the oldest player in the deal by more than a half decade and is owed $21.75 million each of the next two seasons. Donaldson made news last June when he called out Yankees ace Gerrit Cole for his use of sticky substances. The lefty-hitting Rortvedt will platoon behind the plate for the Yanks with returnee Kyle Higashioka, a righty. That's going to be a black hole offensively.
The sims don't like this trade for the Twins because Sanchez has regressed so badly. He looked like a future superstar in finishing second in the 2016 AL Rookie of the Year voting and putting up 33 homers and 90 RBIs in his second full season, named an All-Star. However, while Sanchez still has power, he has only hit .201 since 2017 and is a horrible defender.
The New York Post speculates the Yankees aren't done, either, because they didn't give up any prospects in the trade with the Twins and could use some of that capital to acquire Oakland's Matt Olson. New York has a need at first base.
Caesars Sportsbook has the Yankees at +550 second favorites behind the Astros to win the AL pennant. The Yanks have an Over/Under of 92.5 wins. The Twins are at 75.5.Â
