Hall of Fame Game trading preview
- Cardinals to win (49%)
- Less than 35.5 points (53%)
Making trades on preseason football can be tricky, with many starters sitting out or playing sparingly. But the start of Thursday's game should be interesting, at least. Kenny Pickett is set to start at quarterback for the Panthers, while Carson Beck, a 2026 third-round pick out of Miami, will start things off for the Cardinals. Love also will be one to watch after becoming the first Notre Dame player to win the Doak Walker Award after totaling 1,952 yards and 21 TDs as the Irish fell just short of the College Football Playoff. Beck, who led Miami to the national title game but struggled in the loss to Indiana, is the third-string QB behind Brissett and Gardner Minshew II, and neither is expected to play.
Beck and Love could have some growing pains in their first live NFL action, but they also have the talent and confidence to make some plays. On the other side is Pickett, who is on his fifth team after being taken as the 20th pick in the 2022 draft by the Steelers. He had 13 TD passes and 13 interceptions over his two seasons in Pittsburgh and has thrown just 87 passes over the past two, with the Eagles and Raiders. The Panthers are coming into the season as division champions, but they went 8-9 in the dismal NFC South, so they aren't exactly stacked with talent.
Preseason games usually come down to depth and are decided in the late going, but I sense this will be a lower-scoring matchup wherew an early lead could stand up. I think the confident youngsters will get things going on a decent note, and the Cardinals went 2-1 in the preseason last year, so I expect them to go for the victory. Polymarket has them listed at 49% probability to win. It's unlikely they'll be a much different team this year after losing quarterback Kyler Murray, but they have young pieces and they can win in the preseason. Carolina is 1-5 over the past two preseasons.
This is a low total but these aren't very good teams and with the starters mostly out, it could be a slog. Only one of the Cardinals' past six preseason games has seen more than 37 total points, and four of Carolina's six over the past two years have failed to even crack 30. This one could be full of mistakes on both sides, so it should come in at less than 35.5 points. The likelihood of that outcome at Polymarket is 53%.
