Best bets for Friday, Jan. 16
After Thursday's loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Houston Rockets look to bounce back when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Timberwolves have won seven of their last 10 games, powered by Anthony Edwards' 28.9 points per game. Minnesota hasn't played since Tuesday, giving it a definite rest advantage. Yet the SportsLine Projection Model, which simulates every game 10,000 times, gives a strong lean to the home side. The model has Kevin Durant's Rockets covering in a whopping 71% of its simulations.
The championship hangover has been real for the Florida Panthers, who sit second from last in the NHL's Atlantic Division. Star Matthew Tkachuk remains sidelined, as does Brad Marchand. They'll have to visit a dangerous Carolina Hurricanes team on Friday, likely without either attacker. Carolina leads the Metropolitan Division but has lost two straight and is just 5-4-1 over its last ten contests. Florida covers in 72% of the model's simulations.
