ByUpdated: Jul 18, 2025 2:01PM UTC . 5 min read

After a lighter sports day on Thursday, Friday is far more loaded with 15 MLB games, The Open Championship at Royal Portrush and the WNBA 3-Point Contest and Skills Challenge taking place. MLB has quite a few notable games on the schedule, such as the Red Sox visiting the Cubs, Reds at Mets, Astros at Mariners and Brewers at Dodgers. That Boston-Chicago matchup kicks off the day's slate at 2:20 p.m. ET, with Houston-Seattle and Milwaukee-Los Angeles rounding out the day starting at 10:10 p.m. ET.

Best bets for Friday, July 18

The National League clash between the Reds and Mets is notable for the NL playoff race, as the Mets hold the second Wild Card spot while the Reds are 2.5 games back of the third spot. We can tell you that the SportsLine Projection Model likes the Reds on the money line as +140 underdogs, as Cincy wins in 47% of model simulations, returning value at those odds. Veteran lefty Sean Manaea (0-1, 2.70 ERA) will start for the Mets in just his second outing of the 2025 season, while the Reds will be starting lefty Nick Lodolo (6-6, 3.38 ERA). Manaea pitched just 3.1 innings in his 2025 debut, giving up one earned run but striking out seven against the Kansas City Royals on July 13. As for Lodolo, he''s coming off six innings of shutout ball in his last start of the first half against the Miami Marlins.

The WNBA began its All-Star Break on Thursday, and while the All-Star Game itself isn't until Saturday, two big competitions will take place Friday night at 8 p.m. ET: the 3-Point Contest and the Skills Challenge. New York's Sabrina Ionescu headlines the field, which also consists of Los Angeles' Kelsey Plum, Washington's Sonia Citron, Indiana's Lexie Hull and Atlanta's Allisha Gray, who won this contest last year. Ionescu won this competition in 2023, making a record 37 shots out of 40 attempts. Indiana's Caitlin Clark was supposed to take part in this contest, but pulled out of it and Saturday's All-Star Game due to injury. Ionescu is the favorite at Caesars at +120. Gray is also taking part in the skills competition, where she's a +275 favorite after winning it last year as well. Gray is favored over a field consisting of Seattle's Skylar Diggins (+325), Minnesota's Courtney Williams (+340), New York's Natasha Cloud (+350) and Seattle's Erica Wheeler (+500).

The 153rd Open Championship began Thursday and continued Friday ahead of the event's cut. Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and reigning Open champ Xander Schauffele were the five favorites entering the competition, and Shane Lowry, who won this event the last time it was at Royal Portrush in 2019, was also a name worth watching. Jacob Skov Olesen, Haotong Li, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Matt Fitzpatrick were the low scorers in Round 1 with -4 finishes, while Scheffler was one of four to finish one shot back at -3. As of Friday morning, Brian Harman is atop the leaderboard at 8-under par after shooting a 65 on Friday.
