Best bets for Friday, Jan. 23
The Detroit Pistons remain the cream of the crop in the NBA's Eastern Conference, but they face a tough test Friday when they host the Houston Rockets, who are fourth in the West. The Pistons (32-10) have won seven of their past eight games, including a 112-104 victory against New Orleans on Wednesday. The Rockets (26-16) lost a 128-122 overtime battle with the 76ers on Thursday night to snap a four-game win streak. The Pistons are 3.5-point favorites in the Rockets vs. Pistons odds. Detroit star Cade Cunningham is questionable with an illness, but the Pistons are covering in 54% of the SportsLine model's simulations. In other NBA action, the Denver Nuggets (30-15) and Milwaukee Bucks (18-25) try to find their rhythm when they face off Friday night. The SportsLine model has Milwaukee covering the spread 60% of the time as a 6.5-point underdog, with the pick earning an 'A' grade.
A huge Big Ten rivalry highlights Friday's college basketball schedule, with the third-ranked Michigan Wolverines hosting the Ohio State Buckeyes. Michigan (17-1) has won three straight by double digits since its only loss of the season, a surprising setback to Wisconsin. The Buckeyes (13-5) have won five of their past seven games, and three of their five losses have come against ranked teams. The Wolverines have been dominant on both ends all season, but the SportsLine model has the Buckeyes covering as 14.5-point underdogs in 67% of its simulations, earning the pick a 'B' grade. In the NHL, the Tampa Bay Lightning look to extend their streak without a regulation loss to 15 games (13-0-1) when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks. The SportsLine model has Tampa Bay winning 69% of the time as -267 road favorites, good for a 'B' grade.
