Zach Wilson odds: How many more games will struggling Jets quarterback start before being benched?
The 2023 NFL trade deadline is Halloween afternoon, and I promise you that the vast majority of New York Jets fans know that in the wake of another atrocious start at quarterback by Zach Wilson on Sunday. ESPN personality and noted Jets fans Mike Greenberg said this morning on "Get Up" that Wilson cannot play for the Jets ever again. SportsLine offers odds on Wilson's future.
That the Jets rallied to win Week 1 against Buffalo with Wilson after Aaron Rodgers went down on the fourth offensive play of the season looks more and more like a fluke. Wilson then threw for just 170 yards and three picks in a 30-10 loss in Dallas in Week 2.
Things weren't much better for the former No. 2 overall pick in Sunday's 15-10 home loss to New England, New York's 15th straight loss in the series. Wilson completed 18 of 36 passes for 157 yards while rushing once for one yard. He didn't throw a pick but also didn't connect for a touchdown, and his offense had seven three-and-outs. New York totaled 195 yards. Wilson was booed loudly, especially when he threw a 2-yard completion to Tyler Conklin on fourth-and-10 in the fourth quarter that clinched the Pats' victory. Jets legend Joe Namath criticized both Wilson and the team's coaching staff several times during the game.
Star wideout Garrett Wilson appeared to have a heated conversation with Wilson and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett on the sideline at one point. Hackett was essentially hired to work with Rodgers, remember. The only other quarterback on the roster is journeyman Tim Boyle, who has only three career starts.
Coach Robert Saleh says Wilson remains his QB going forward – "he gives us the best chance to win" -- but the team absolutely will have to bring someone in or risk losing the locker room. Wilson has the lowest passer rating in the NFL this season (57.0) and already was the only player since 1970 to finish last in passer rating in back-to-back seasons, doing so in 2021 and 2022. Wilson's career touchdown to interception ratio of 17:22 is worse than that of historic former No. 1 overall bust JaMarcus Russell (17:18).
New York is now +650 to make the playoffs and -1100 for to not. Its updated over/under win total is 6.5.
The Kirk Cousins trade rumors only got hotter Sunday when Cousins' Vikings' fell to 0-3 with another crushing late loss. Cousins leads the NFL in passing yards (1,075) and passing TDs (9). Those are the most yards and TDs by a quarterback through three games with zero wins since 1950. Matt Ryan and Carson Wentz are available in free agency.
Will Zach Wilson start at least 10 total games at quarterback for the Jets this season?
