NFL Week 6: Narrow point spreads, surprising favorites emerge with look-ahead lines

Week 5 is coming but Week 6 isn't so far away.

Most of the attention in the NFL world is on Week 5, with a headline-worthy match-up between the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks kicking things off on Thursday evening. However, it is never too early to glance ahead and Week 6 point spreads are emerging right on time.

Large point spreads have been a theme in the early going of the 2019 season, with the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins seemingly involved in lopsided affairs on a weekly basis. However, only one double-digit point spread currently exists on Week 6 look-ahead lines and it involves the Thursday night game between the Patriots and the New York Giants. Unsurprisingly, the Patriots are two-touchdown favorites in the game but, while there is still time for a double-digit spread in the game between Dallas and the New York Jets (no line yet available with Sam Darnold's health uncertain), everything else is relatively narrow.

For some, it might be a surprise to see the Jacksonville Jaguars listed as 1.5-point favorites over the New Orleans Saints at some shops, even with the Jaguars playing at home. New Orleans has the name value in this spot but, in recent days, Gardner Minshew is playing well and Jacksonville could draw attention as a small home favorite.

Elsewhere, the ugly match-up between the Dolphins and the Washington Redskins is already drawing attention, as the two winless squads face off with one team guaranteed to emerge without further blemish. Miami, coming off a Week 5 bye, still projects as a 6.5-point home underdog against Washington, with this appearing to be the harshest market correction yet toward the Dolphins. Things could change when Washington faces New England in Week 5 but, for now, the Redskins will seemingly be favored on the road.

Look-ahead lines aren't only useful for early betting, as they can also portray market movement on the heels of whatever happens during the ensuing slate. If nothing else, more information can be useful in handicapping and Week 6 is rapidly approaching.
