New York Giants 2022 NFL Draft odds: Malik Willis, Kenny Pickett options after declining fifth-year option on quarterback Daniel Jones?

The New York Giants have declined their fifth-year option on QB Daniel Jones.

When the New York Giants took Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, pretty much everyone screamed: "Reach!" Oh, and the Bills took quarterback Josh Allen one pick later. Jones has been largely a bust so far and the Giants declined his rookie fifth-year option Thursday, which has led to speculation the team could draft a quarterback with one of its two first-round picks in tonight's draft from Las Vegas.

History has shown us that quarterbacks who don't have their fifth-year options picked up will not be playing for that team after Year 4 – the most recent notable example being Mitchell Trubisky and the Chicago Bears. They took him No. 2 overall in the 2017 draft, declined his fifth-year option, and he moved on to Buffalo after Year 4.

Had the Giants picked up the option, they would have been on the hook for $22.384 million guaranteed in 2023. Ask the Browns with Baker Mayfield or Panthers with Sam Darnold if they are glad they picked up fifth-year options on those guys with their guarantees. Now neither can be given away. The deadline for the fifth-year option is not for a few days, so it's curious timing.

If Jones does play well this season, the Giants could always slap the franchise tag on him next offseason. Jones has no ties to new Giants coach Brian Daboll or GM Joe Schoen, both hired this offseason from Buffalo. Jones is also coming off a fairly significant neck injury, although he'll be fine to open 2022.

The Giants have the No. 5 and No. 7 picks in the first round, the latter thanks to the Justin Fields trade last year with Chicago. On the exact position of first drafted player prop (which means wherever the team's first pick ends up even if traded), New York is favored to pick an offensive lineman at -180 at No. 5. A quarterback is way down at +2000.

It does seem unlikely a QB is the pick at No. 5, but what about No. 7 if Carolina passes on one at No. 6 and they are all still on the board? Liberty's Malik Willis is the -190 favorite to be the first QB off the board followed by Pitt's Kenny Pickett at +170.

The team favored to draft Pickett at +150 is Carolina, presumably at No. 6. The Giants are +5000. The team favored to draft Willis is Pittsburgh at +250 even though the Steelers are down at No. 20 – they could always trade up. The Giants are only +1500 on that prop. At quarterback, the Giants currently have only Tyrod Taylor under contract for 2023. The team has done plenty of homework on UNC QB Sam Howell and he could be a second-round option.
