Matt Ryan trade odds: Quarterback's Falcons (or Colts) future likely will be decided today due to roster bonus deadline
The Atlanta Falcons were ready to trade quarterback and former NFL MVP Matt Ryan if they were able to acquire Deshaun Watson in a deal with the Cleveland Browns, but Watson decided he wanted to play in Cleveland for 230 million reasons. There are multiple reports that teams are still calling the Falcons about the 37-year-old Ryan and if a deal is going to happen, it likely will be today or Ryan should be in an Atlanta uniform in 2022. SportsLine offers odds on a possible Ryan deal.Â
Ryan gets a $7.5 million roster bonus from the Falcons if he's still on the roster at 4 p.m. ET and the team isn't going to pay that and then ship him out. He was originally due that last week but agreed to push it back to today because of the Watson trade talks.
Atlanta isn't going anywhere this season so if it can get even a mid-round pick for Ryan and some salary-cap space, that's a win for the Falcons. Ryan has two years and about $54 million left on his contract. The Falcons will be on the hook for about $40 million in dead cap money if they move Ryan today. Feleipe Franks is the only other QB on the roster.
If Ryan is dealt it likely would be to the Indianapolis Colts, who also were interested in trading for Watson, but the Texans wouldn't even listen regarding sending him inside the AFC South. Indianapolis has a win-now roster but a gaping hole at QB after trading Carson Wentz to Washington. The Colts have the cap space to take Ryan's huge salary as well. Indianapolis doesn't face Atlanta in 2022. Baker Mayfield is a Colts possibility as well.Â
The Seattle Seahawks are another possibility after sending Russell Wilson to Denver, but it sure seems like Ryan would be a bad fit for a franchise that is looking at a rebuild.
The Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints both have a hole at quarterback – both were in on Watson – but the Falcons are highly unlikely to trade Ryan inside the division just like the Texans wouldn't with Watson. Mayfield is in play for the Seahawks, Panthers and Saints as well.Â
Ryan might not be an MVP candidate any longer but had a solid 2021 season, completing 67 percent of his passes for 3,968 yards, 20 TDs and 12 picks despite not having top receiver Calvin Ridley for much of the season. Ridley already has been suspended for all of 2022. Atlanta has the No. 8 pick in this year's draft and could take a quarterback there as Ryan's replacement. Liberty's Malik Willis, Ole Miss' Matt Corral and Pitt's Kenny Pickett all met with Falcons officials during the NFL Combine.
