April 27, 2017: Bears make colossal mistake in NFL Draft by taking Mitchell Trubisky
Every team in the NFL, just as an example, passed on Michigan quarterback Tom Brady multiple times in the 2000 draft before the Patriots took a flier on him at No. 199 overall. Six quarterbacks went before him. Thus, it's hard to call passing on Brady a "colossal mistake" by anyone because everyone did it.
However, the term "colossal mistake" might not be strong enough for what Chicago Bears GM Ryan Pace did in the first round of the 2017 draft three years ago Monday in Philadelphia.
Chicago held the No. 3 overall pick in Round 1, but Pace decided to send the Nos. 3, 67 and 111 picks, as well as a 2018 third-round pick, to the San Francisco 49ers to move up one spot. There, Pace took North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky even though he started just one season with the Tar Heels.
He was the sixth quarterback to be taken by the Bears in the top five in franchise history, joining Sid Luckman (1939, No. 2 overall); Bob Williams (1951, No. 2 overall); Bobby Layne (1948, No. 3 overall); Johnny Lujack (1946, No. 4 overall); and Jim McMahon (1982, No. 5 overall).
The Browns were always going to take defensive end Myles Garrett at No. 1 overall, and the Niners weren't taking Trubisky yet Pace still gave up all those picks to jump one spot in fear another team would trade with San Francisco.
Trubisky has largely struggled in the NFL and likely won't even be Chicago's starter this season with the team trading for Nick Foles, and it's likely the Bears don't pick up Trubisky's fifth-year rookie option. The deadline for that is early next month.
Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs traded up to No. 10 overall and took Texas Tech's Patrick Mahomes, who looks already on a Hall of Fame track with an NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP Award already in tow. He's the favorite at William Hill sportsbook to win another regular-season MVP in 2020.
The Houston Texans traded up to No. 12 overall and selected Clemson's Deshaun Watson, who also has the potential to be an all-timer. Watson and Mahomes had much better college careers than Trubisky yet Pace essentially ignored both.
