This is an outrage. It's only the third time Boise has been a home dog since 2001. The first time it lost to Wazzu, but this was before the Chris Petersen Era. The last time was in 2021 when a 4-4 Broncos team smacked No. 25 Fresno State around 40-10. Washington tore the Broncos secondary apart last week, but UCF can't pass, and must play to Boise's strength defensively.
We often talk about overreactions from Week 1 to Week 2, but there might not have been enough reaction to the opposite results from these two teams. Boise State could not get stops or hit explosive plays in a 56-19 loss to Washington while UCF needed only one half of football to put the game out of reach and cruise to a 56-6 win against Kent State. UCF will be much more challenged playing a better opponent and doing it on the road, but Boise does not seem to have a great counter against teams that can put up counts quick. UCF is not Washington, but the points can pile up in a hurry and that's a bad matchup, even on the Smurf Turf.
What was most impressive about UCF's win over Kent State was how well the defense played from start to finish. Not letting up against a team you're dominating speaks to the culture shift on that side of the ball. Boise will be much better than what we saw vs Washington, but it may not be enough.
