Coronavirus: Jimmie Johnson cleared for NASCAR Quaker State 400 but has never won at Kentucky

Seven-time NASCAR points champion Jimmie Johnson has been cleared to race in this Sunday's Cup Series Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway after being forced to sit out last Sunday's race at Indianapolis when he tested positive for the coronavirus. That snapped Johnson's streak of 663 straight Cup Series starts. He had not missed a race since going full-time in Cup racing in 2002.

Johnson was tested after his wife received a positive result but never exhibited symptoms. JJ tested negative on Monday and Tuesday of this week and that satisfied NASCAR's COVID-19 requirements. Four other Hendrick Motorsports crew members were also tested for the coronavirus and all were negative. 

Sunday will be Johnson's last chance to win at Kentucky Speedway, as it's NASCAR's only visit of the season. Johnson has won 83 times in NASCAR's top series, but Kentucky one of three active tracks where has yet to. The others are Watkins Glen and Chicagoland.

In nine career starts in Sparta, Ky., Johnson has one Top 5 finish -- third in 2011 in the first Cup Series race at Kentucky Speedway -- and five Top 10s with an average finish of 17.0 that is 15th among active drivers.

In his No. 48 Chevrolet, Johnson is +2500 on the moneyline odds at William Hill sportsbook to win the Quaker State 400. He deserved to win in 2013 in leading a race-high 182 laps but spun out after a late restart and finished ninth. JJ hasn't finished better than 14th in his past four visits to the track and hasn't won anywhere since June 4, 2017, at Dover.  

This year, his average finish has been 15th. The 44-year-old Johnson is 15th in the driver standings, 46 points above the cutoff for the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs – JJ was granted a playoff waiver after being forced out of Indianapolis, although that still doesn't guarantee he will qualify.

Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports Team has also yet to win a Cup Series race at Kentucky. Sunday's event begins at 2:30 p.m. ET.
