Yankees vs. Mets Tuesday Subway Series MLB odds, props: Anthony Rizzo on longest hitless streak of his career

The Subway Series returns Tuesday as the Yankees visit the Mets.

While MLB changed its scheduling model this year so that all 30 teams will play each other in at least one series in each season, it made sure to keep home-and-away series in big interleague rivalries. The biggest of those is the Yankees-Mets Subway Series, which begins Tuesday at Citi Field on TBS. Two of MLB's biggest stars, sluggers Aaron Judge and Pete Alonso, will miss the series as they recover from injuries. Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo will try to break out of a career-worst slump. The Mets are -155 at Caesars Sportsbook.

Entering this season, it would have surprised few if we were to see a rematch of the 2000 World Series between the Yankees and Mets after both made the 2022 postseason. And both could still make the 2023 Fall Classic, but they likely would have to do so as Wild Card teams, with the Mets (31-35) fourth in the NL East and 9.5 games out of first and manager Buck Showalter potentially on the hot seat, and the Yankees (38-29) sitting 9.5 games out of first in the AL East.

The teams split four meetings last year, with the home team sweeping each two-game set. Tuesday is a few days before the 26th anniversary of the first Interleague game between the two teams at the old Yankee Stadium on June 16, 1997.

With Judge on the injured list due to a toe sprain, the last thing the Yankees need right now is Rizzo in a funk. But he is hitless in his last 24 at-bats, the longest such drought of his career. That has dropped his season average from .297 to .269, still much better than last year's .224 number. Rizzo and many other lefties expected to see their batting averages rise this year because of the elimination of the shift.

Maybe Monday's day off is what Rizzo needed, as he's batting just .033 this month with zero RBI in 30 at-bats. He is -170 to get a hit Tuesday (Over 0.5 hits) and is 6-for-27 career with a homer, double and three strikeouts against Mets starter and three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer.

Scherzer (5-2, 3.71 ERA) was knocked around for five runs and 11 hits over 5.2 innings last time out in a no-decision vs. Atlanta, but hasn't personally lost since May 3. He is 4-5 with a 3.67 ERA in 11 career starts vs. the Yankees. Giancarlo Stanton is 6-for-24 off him with three homers and 12 strikeouts. Scherzer is +150 to record a win tonight and set at O/U 6.5 Ks.

It's Luis Severino (0-1, 5.75 ERA) for the Yankees in only his fifth start of the season. He has been shelled for 11 runs and 15 hits over nine innings in his past two, both losses. The right-hander surrendered three home runs in each. Francisco Lindor is 5-for-17 off him with a homer. Severino is +210 to record a win.
