MLB odds: Twins' Jose Berrios for AL Cy Young? He is second-choice among bettors

The pitcher taking the second-most action at DraftKings to win the AL Cy Young Award may surprise bettors.

The New York Yankees "won" the offseason in terms of landing the biggest fish: Houston Astros right-hander Gerrit Cole. He had earned around $25 million in his MLB career and now will make much more than that per season, landing a nine-year, $324 million contract. That's easily the most ever for a pitcher. Cole will earn $1.09 million per start if he starts 33 games per season, which is what he did in 2019.

Cole was spectacular last year in going 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA (first in AL), 326 strikeouts (also first) and a WHIP of 0.89 (second). Yet he didn't even win the Cy Young Award; teammate Justin Verlander did. The Yankees are going to score a ton of runs this season and it's not a huge surprise that Cole is the +275 favorite on the DraftKings MLB futures odds to win his first Cy Young Award. Bettors at DraftKings are hammering Cole as he has taken the biggest handle of any AL pitcher and the most overall bets.

Fine, that's not surprising, either. However, No. 2 on both the handle and total bets taken is a bit shocking: Minnesota Twins right-hander Jose Berrios, who could be great value at +3300 on the MLB odds and would certainly cost the book a ton of money at that price should he win.

Berrios, 25, is a two-time All-Star. He was 14-8 with a 3.68 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 195 strikeouts in a career-best 200.1 innings last year. He started the ALDS opener against the Yankees and did not get a decision, allowing three runs (one earned) in four innings. Berrios did that while making just $620,000.

This season, he'll be earning "only" $4.025 million after somehow losing in arbitration when Berrios was asking $4.4 million, which would still have him criminally underpaid. The Twins haven't had a Cy Young winner since 2006 when Johan Santana won his second.

Third by total bets and overall handle at DraftKings is Tampa Bay's Tyler Glasnow, who is +1800 on the MLB picks. He would have led the majors with a 1.78 ERA in 2019 but only pitched 60.2 innings due to injury. The Yankees' Luis Severino had taken the fourth-highest handle but has been lost for the season already.
