'Mattress Mack' back at it on Astros MLB odds, places another $1.5 million World Series bet

One Houston businessman is taking "hedging" to a new level by betting the Astros to win the World Series.

Earlier this week, Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, owner of Gallery Furniture in Houston, bet a whopping $3.5 million on his hometown Astros to win their second World Series in three years. He placed that wager at a DraftKings sportsbook at Scarlet Pearl casino in Biloxi, Miss. McIngvale got Houston at a price of +220 on the MLB futures odds, which would net him $7.7 million should the Astros win the Fall Classic.

McIngvale always said he was going to keep putting additional money down, and on Thursday he did just that online to the tune of $1.5 million and getting the same +220 odds at FanDuel sportsbook, which would net McIngvale $3.3 million. According to FanDuel's director of publicity Kevin Hennessy, it's the biggest single online wager in that company's history.

"His bet at +220 was the same all customers were getting today," Hennessey said via email Thursday. When asked if that wager had moved the futures odds yet, he added: "It may change tonight (if it hasn't already)."

In fact, when SportsLine checked the FanDuel site, the Astros had dropped to +210. DraftKings now has Houston at the same price.

Why is McIngvale putting all his eggs in one basket other than being an Astros fan? Gallery Furniture is running a promotion in the Houston area currently called "Win it All." Customers who make qualified purchases of $3,000 or more will receive refunds if the Astros win the World Series. So essentially, "Mattress Mack" is hedging with all these bets – he's not done – due to the fact he might have to pay out $15 million on refunds or more should Houston win the Series.

On the updated SportsLine projections, Houston has a 30.9 percent chance to win the World Series. The Astros open the ALDS on Friday at home vs. Tampa Bay.
