Not too hard to understand why the Giants are falling to pieces after once contending in the NL West and for a WC spot: Their rotation (after Logan Webb and Robbie Ray). They had to start overmatched rookie Kai-Wei Teng on Saturday at Citi Field and start what appears to be another overmatched rookie today in Carson Whisenhunt (7.20 ERA). Not a big fan of NYM's Frankie Montas (although he has been better at home) so can't do F5. But the Mets' top three relievers -- Edwin Diaz, Ryan Helsley and Ryne Stanek -- went unused Saturday so it's already only a six-inning game in theory for New York.
It's been a bit bumpy of a go for Frankie Montas, slow to come around since being reactivated in late June, but having pitched his best at home in Citi Field, where he's won both of his starts while posting a 3.31 ERA. The bullpen will likely be active on Sunday for the Mets, but suspect they will all have some run cushion after breaking from a recent 4-game skid with 12 runs on Saturday against a shellshocked Giants bullpen. Maybe more issues today for Bob Melvin, who holds his breath today with SF rookie starter Carson Whisenhunt, who had a bumpy five innings (four runs) in his MLB debut last Monday when the Giants lost to the Pirates.
