Toronto holds a one game lead for the AL Wild Card. If the Blue Jays win today, they're in the playoffs. Hyun Jin Ryu owns a 3.16 home ERA and it's a bullpen day for Tampa Bay.
Look, if you want to fade me on this play go ahead. The Jays have gone scorched earth on my bank account this year. But if logic, reason and motivation are actual things in whatever realm of the multiverse in which this world resides, they absolutely win today and clinch a WC spot to avoid a Sunday Sweat (also the moniker of a new eau de toilette from Dennis Feinstein; yes Parks and Rec is on in the background). Toronto's offense has finally woken up. If the Jays do lose here, I will self-ban poutine from my diet until the 2024 opener and I practically bathe in that messy delicious crap.
The Rays have literally nothing to play for and roll with a bullpen game here in Toronto. Wouldn't surprise me to see them sit some of their bats as well, with only a couple of days left until playoffs start. Toronto on the other hand put up 17 runs in the last two games since being shutout by Gerrit Cole for nine innings and they are only one game up on Houston in the Wild Card race. A lineup that is hitting well is certainly one I want to back at this point in the year. Taking the more motivated team with a well rested bullpen, playing at home at a decent price.
The Rays are trying to get their rotation set for the playoffs. They decided to deploy Zack Littell and Taj Bradley out of the bullpen Friday, meaning neither will be available to start Saturday. Tyler Glasnow and Zach Eflin aren’t on normal rest to start, either, meaning this should be a bullpen game. In Friday’s 11-4 loss to the Blue Jays, the Rays also pulled Yandy Diaz early to give him some extra rest. The Rays don’t care about this game and the Blue Jays are still fighting to make the playoffs, so look for the more motivated team to come away with the victory.
