This is a makeup game from earlier in the season. The Orioles will face the Rays in a three-game series beginning on Friday. The Red Sox are in a dire need for a win. (Baltimore leads Boston by five games in the standings.) This should be a spot in which the Red Sox can catch the Orioles a bit complacent, after an off day. Baltimore also may be looking ahead to big series against the Rays and Blue Jays coming up. I'm on the Red Sox.
Boston's Josh Winckowski has a 6.18 ERA at home. Tonight he'll be up against an Orioles team that is 7-1 this month, scoring an average of 5.25 runs per game. Winckowski's season debut was against the Orioles, and he allowed four earned runs in just three innings. The Orioles' Dean Kremer has been incredibly inconsistent, and I don't see him getting out of tonight's game before surrendering a couple of runs. The over is 5-0-1 in the Red Sox's last six games, which have averaged 12.7 runs per game, and their bullpen was worked hard in their series against the Braves. I don't think either team goes down without a fight, so with limited options on the evening slate, I'll take the over 10.
Why are the Orioles still underdogs? Especially against the Red Sox when they are playing within the division. The Red Sox are 12-29 against the AL East this season and 3-5 against the Orioles. Dean Kremer has been more hit or miss lately but he is coming off a scoreless outing against the Pirates. Josh Winckowski has also been very hit or miss but is coming off a good start. He allowed 4 ER in 3 IP in his debut against the Orioles though. The Orioles have the much better bullpen, and they are rested. We have to start thinking of the Orioles as a good team because in the last two months, they are 34-18 good for third best in the league behind only the Dodgers and Mets. The public perception of the Orioles is off, and we will keep capitalizing on the value as long as we can.
