Twins vs. White Sox Wednesday MLB injury report, odds: Carlos Correa out, Eloy Jimenez back

Some fairly big injury/rest news in this afternoon's Twins-White Sox game.

The Minnesota Twins look for their second season sweep of the AL Central rival Chicago White Sox this afternoon from the South Side of the Windy City, but the White Sox get a big bat back in the lineup in slugging outfielder Eloy Jimenez. On the flip side, the Twins are resting star shortstop Carlos Correa as well as No. 1 catcher Gary Sanchez. The Sox are -120 favorites at Caesars Sportsbook.

Power was not expected to an issue for the Sox this year, but they are 27th in MLB with 62 homers. Injuries certainly have not helped, and Jimenez has as much pure power as anyone in the league – he just can't stay healthy. The 25-year-old hit one homer in 11 games before suffering a hamstring tear April 23 that required surgery, and he hit two homers with a .246/.318/.351 slash line in a 17-game minor-league rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte. This is not a panic move to avoid the sweep as Jimenez was always going to be activated either today or tomorrow.

The Twins are 5-0 against the White Sox this year, their best start against Chicago since going 6-0 to open the 2011 season. Minnesota has outscored Chicago 31-12 in 2022. The Twins are looking for their fifth sweep of the season overall and to equal their high-water mark of 11 games over .500. Luis Arraez has hit safely in 14 straight against the White Sox, dating back to July 5, 2021, and is batting .407 in that stretch.

It's perhaps not a shock that Correa (.286, nine HRs, 29 RBI) is getting a game off as he's gone hitless over his last 14 at-bats. The Twins have still managed 14 runs in the first two games of this series despite his poor showing. It's simply a rest day for Sanchez (.219, nine HRs, 34 RBI) as well.

Joe Ryan (6-3, 3.00 ERA) starts for Minnesota on the mound and this is his first-ever look at the White Sox. Ryan's 90 career strikeouts are the most in Twins/Senators history through a pitcher's first 17 career games. His .197 opponents' batting average through his first 17 career games is second lowest in franchise history.

Chicago turns to veteran Lance Lynn (1-1, 4.50 ERA) in his fourth outing since his long stint on the injured list to open the season. He has gone 8-4 with a 2.95 ERA and a .198 (78-394) opponents' average in 19 starts at home since 2021. This will be Lynn's sixth career start vs. the Twins (he also pitched for them), and he has allowed three runs or less in each of the previous outings, two or less in four of them, and one or less in three.
