Today's sports betting picks: Chiefs Over 28 points among best bets, plus more NFL Thursday Night Football and MLB picks for Sept. 15

The SportsLine crew shares its expert bets for Thursday, Sept. 15, on The Early Edge podcast

By@SportsLineUpdated: Sep 15, 2022 2:58PM UTC . 4 min read

Host Jonathan Coachman is joined by sports betting experts Larry Hartstein, Allie O'Neill and Allan Bell on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for NFL Thursday Night Football and MLB for Thursday, Sept. 15.

The crew hits the storylines, including the low scoring in prime-time NFL games so far. All three games have gone Under, and the total for Chiefs vs. Chargers on Thursday Night Football (8:15 p.m. ET) is 54 points. It opened at 54.5, and if it gets back there, Allan says bettors need to know that all seven games at that total or higher in 2022 have gone Under.

Then it's time for the crew's selections, and Allie has an MLB pick, from Astros vs. Athletics (7:20 p.m. ET). She is backing Houston -1.5 Runs (-142), with James Kaprielian (3-9, 4.79 ERA) scheduled to start for Oakland. The right-hander took the loss in four of his past five starts, and he has a 6.46 ERA and 1.90 WHIP over that span. Astros starter Lance McCullers, on the other hand, is 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA since coming off the IL, and he threw six shutout innings against the A's in his first start. Houston's bullpen also is far superior, so Allie expects the Astros to win handily.

Allan has four plays from Chargers vs. Chiefs, and the first is Travis Kelce's longest reception Over 22.5 yards (-110). Bell says the Kansas City tight end is averaging 8.6 catches and 128 receiving yards in his past three games against L.A. "Travis Kelce eats up on the Chargers," AB says. "I think he's going to do it tonight."

Bell also knows Patrick Mahomes has "feasted in September in his career," so Allan is playing the Chiefs Team Total Over 28 (-145). Larry pointed out earlier that the Chiefs quarterback has 42 TD passes and just three interceptions in September during his career. Allan adds that Mahomes is 21-3 with 50 TD passes in his career against the AFC West, and K.C. averages more than 30 points with Mahomes as the starter.

Bell does expect to see some turnovers on Thursday Night Football, so he likes Justin Herbert Over 0.5 interceptions (-105) and Mahomes Over 0.5 picks (-140). He expects both teams to throw a ton of passes, so there are bound to be some mistakes.

The Maestro also has a best bet on Chiefs vs. Chargers, and he taking Herbert Over 13.5 Rushing Yards (-113). "He's gone over this in three of his four meetings with the Chiefs," Hartstein says of the Los Angeles quarterback, and in the other one he had six carries but gained just 9 yards. The Chiefs defense plays pretty deep in its Cover 2, so "there are running lanes to be had," Larry says.
