Pirates vs. Padres Tuesday MLB probable pitchers, odds: Blake Snell on four-start scoreless streak at Petco Park, could be last start before trade

Padres lefty Blake Snell has been dominant at home of late.

San Diego Padres lefty Blake Snell had a 22-inning scoreless streak end last time out when he had the audacity to allow one run over five innings in a tough-luck loss in Toronto. The former AL Cy Young Award winner, however, hasn't allowed a run at Petco Park in four straight starts, and he'll put that hot streak on the line when the Padres host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday. The Padres are -275 favorites at Caesars Sportsbook. It might be Snell's final home start with San Diego ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

Snell (6-8, 2.67 ERA) carried a 21-inning overall scoreless streak into Toronto but that ended on a Jordan Luplow RBI single in the top of the second inning. Somehow, Snell allowed just that one run over five despite tying a career high with seven walks. Snell became the first Padres pitcher to walk seven in an outing in which he allowed one run or fewer since Oliver Pérez did so in 2003.

In the previous 11 starts, Snell had a 0.71 ERA. There's some talk the team will trade him by the deadline as Snell is set for free agency after the season. San Diego is still six games out of the final NL wild card spot and is +280 to make the playoffs at DraftKings, with No at -350. Yes got about 25 cents longer after last night's terrible 8-4 home loss to Pittsburgh. USA Today's Bob Nightengale has reported the Padres are likely to shop the 30-year-old Snell, barring a "sudden and dramatic winning streak."

The last time Snell allowed a run at home was when he was shelled for six earned over four innings in a loss against Boston on May 19. Since then at Petco Park:

    • June 5 vs. Cubs: Six shutout innings, two hits allowed, eight Ks in 5-0 win.
    • May 17 vs. Rays: Six shutout innings, two hits allowed, 12 Ks in 2-0 win.
    • July 3 vs. Angels: Five shutout innings, seven hits allowed, four Ks in 10-3 win.
    • July 8 vs. Mets: Six shutout innings, one hit allowed, 11 Ks in 3-1 win.

Overall, Snell is 5-4 with a 2.98 ERA at home. He faced the Pirates in Pittsburgh on June 28 and allowed two runs over six with only three hits in a 7-1 loss. There was an air quality delay and it may have thrown off Snell a bit as he allowed a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning but nothing after. Snell's player props for Tuesday haven't been posted yet.

It's 43-year-old lefty Rich Hill (7-9, 4.84 ERA) for the Pirates. He's very likely to be traded as Pittsburgh isn't going anywhere this year and Hill isn't part of the future. Hill's value isn't that high as has allowed at least three runs in each of his last seven starts and holds a 6.53 ERA in July. Manny Machado is 5-for-12 off him with two homers and two doubles.
