NFL Week 5 opening line report, odds, spreads: Trey Lance likely will get first start for 49ers vs. Cardinals

Could it be Trey Lance time in Week 5 for the San Francisco 49ers?

The lone first-round rookie quarterback yet to start a game this NFL season is the San Francisco 49ers' Trey Lance, but that should change this Sunday at MVP candidate Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals … depending on the injury status of Jimmy Garoppolo. The Cardinals opened as 5-point favorites on the NFL odds.

Jimmy G played the first half of Sunday's 28-21 home loss to Seattle but didn't in the second half due to a calf injury. He could be seen walking with a slight limp. He finished 14-for-23 for 165 yards with a TD and a pick – the Niners were tied 7-7 with the Seahawks at the half. Lance finished 19-of-18 for 157 yards and two touchdowns and added 41 yards on the ground on seven carries. Coach Kyle Shanahan has said previously there is no QB controversy and that Garoppolo is his starter if healthy.

"Some good, some bad . . . He got thrown in not expecting to get in," Shanahan said of Lance's play Sunday. "I thought he ran the ball well, hit some passes, obviously missed some passes, was in a tough situation there when we were down two scores, did a good job moving the chains a couple times with his legs, but it looked like a typical first game."

Garoppolo said he'll have an MRI on Monday and sounds like he expects to miss some time: "I'm hopeful it'll just be a couple weeks, something like that." Once first-round rookies finally get a start, they rarely go back to the bench.

Entering Week 5, rookie QBs had just one victory this season and that was by New England's Mac Jones over fellow rookie Zach Wilson of the Jets. However, two rookies won Sunday: Wilson led an upset of the Tennessee Titans and Justin Fields led the Bears to a 24-14 win over the Detroit Lions – had Chicago lost that game, Matt Nagy might not be the coach today.

Arizona had maybe the most impressive win of Week 4, a 37-20 upset of the Rams in Los Angeles to improve to 4-0 – the only other unbeaten team is Las Vegas, which plays tonight at the Los Angeles Chargers. Murray threw for 268 yards and two scores and rushed for 39 yards. He is the new +550 favorite at Caesars Sportsbook to win NFL MVP.

The only winless team remaining is the Lions – both the Jets and Giants won Sunday, the first time they won on the same day since Dec. 22, 2019 (Giants won 41-35 in OT at Washington | Jets won 16-10 vs. Pittsburgh). The first London game of the season is Sunday with the Jets facing the Atlanta Falcons at 9:30 p.m. ET from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Atlanta opened at -3.5. The Giants are 7.5-point dogs at Dallas.

The marquee matchup of the week is the Sunday night matchup between the Bills and Chiefs from Kansas City. Buffalo was 0-2 vs. KC last year, losing 26-17 at home in the regular season and then 38-24 at Arrowhead Stadium in the AFC title game. The Chiefs are -3 for this one.

They had little trouble Sunday in a 42-30 win at Philadelphia as Patrick Mahomes had five TD passes. Andy Reid became the first coach in NFL history to win 100 games with two teams. Reid's 140 victories with the Eagles are the most in franchise history.

Buffalo trounced visiting Houston 40-0, already the second shutout of the season for the Bills. It's the first time since 1990 they have two in a season. The Texans had just 109 yards offense, eight in the first half, and turned it over four times.
