NFL Props: Odds released on the future of Cowboys WR Dez Bryant
The mercurial Cowboys receiver could be in a new uniform next season as a dispute over salary looms with the club. Here are odds on his next destination.
Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant has been a bit of a disappointment on the field, and he's starting to become a potential distraction off it.
This unfortunate combination could lead to the physical playmaker suiting up for another team next season.
The 29-year-old Oklahoma State product is due $12.5 million in salary next year and will count $16 million against the Cowboys' salary cap.
It is widely believed Bryant will be asked to take a pay cut in order to stay with the Cowboys next season. The receiver scoffed at the notion earlier this week when addressing the media.
"I haven't heard no talk about that but if it comes, I don't know, probably not," he said. "I believe in me."
This is the type of dialogue that often precedes a player and team parting ways, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is unlikely to part with a key playmaker unless he views the club as having no other option.
Bryant leads the team with 66 catches for 815 yards and six touchdowns. But this production is a drop-off from the 91 catches, 1,312 yards and 14 touchdowns he averaged from 2012-14.
Sportsbook Boomaker.eu has offered odds on the off-season future of Bryant:
Retained, +150 (bet $100 to win $150)
Cut, +350 (bet $100 to win $350)
Traded, +800 (bet $100 to win $800)
Pick: Cut (+350). This seems like a value selection because it's the nearly inevitable conclusion when a highly paid NFL player starts to underperform to his contract and the team exercises its leverage in a league with no guaranteed contracts.
Moreover, it appears Bryant and the club could be headed toward an ugly public dispute, and it doesn't help that the receiver doesn't appear to mesh well with quarterback Dak Prescott. These factors reduce his trade value, which makes a trade unlikely.Â
