It will be very unusual watching the Green Bay Packers in a primetime game without Aaron Rodgers under center. The Packers (2-1) play their first night game with Jordan Love at quarterback Thursday as they host the Detroit Lions (2-1) in an NFC North matchup to kick off Week 4. Rodgers' final pass in a Green Bay uniform was intercepted by Detroit and sped along his departure from Wisconsin for New York. This marks the first time the Packers will host the Lions on a Thursday in one of the NFL's oldest rivalries.
The Packers are one of the league's most popular teams, so they were scheduled for the maximum of five primetime games even though Love was such a question mark entering the year. The Lions generally have been bad for years -- they're still the only NFC team to never reach the Super Bowl -- so they haven't played under the lights too much. This will be the second time Detroit has played a Thursday night game, which began in 2006. The Lions' lone previous appearance came in a 27-23 loss to the Packers in 2015.
The winner Thursday earns a vital early tiebreaker. The NFC North winner most likely will be one of these two teams with the defending division champion Vikings currently 0-3 and potentially mulling a trade of QB Kirk Cousins, and the Bears also 0-3 and the biggest mess in the NFL. Green Bay is 1-0 in division games thanks to a Week 1 blowout win in Chicago, while this is Detroit's first game in the division. The Lions host the Packers on Thanksgiving. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the two Thursday games will mark only the second time that two teams have squared off multiple times on a Thursday in the same season (1926 Chicago Bears/Chicago Cardinals).
Detroit is currently the -105 favorite at DraftKings to win the division for the first time since 1993 -- the longest drought in the NFC -- and Green Bay is +155. Both have updated over/under season win totals of 9.5.Â
It could be quite the week for Wisconsin sports fans if the Packers win to take over sole possession of first in the division after the Milwaukee Bucks stunned the NBA on Wednesday by acquiring All-Star guard Damian Lillard from Portland.Â
