Giants vs. Seahawks NFL Week 8 odds, trends: Recent history says underdog New York will cover spread, may win outright

The New York Giants keep winning yet are still underdogs in Week 8.

The 6-1 New York Giants are the Rodney Dangerfields of the NFL -- they are getting no respect. Last week, the Giants were almost inexplicably 3-point underdogs at sliding Jacksonville, and this week they are +3 against at a rebuilding -- although surprisingly competitive -- Seattle Seahawks team starting journeyman Geno Smith at quarterback. History from this century hints New York will not only cover that number, but may also win outright.

Since 2000, road underdogs with a 6-1 record have been perfect against the spread and have won the past six straight up. This scenario last occurred in Week 8 of last season when Green Bay was 6-1 but was +6.5 at Arizona (which was unbeaten) on a Thursday night. The Packers won 24-21 thanks to a late Kyler Murray interception in the Green Bay end zone.

Remember, the Giants declined the fifth-year option on quarterback Daniel Jones, but they may have to consider working out a long-term deal if the former No. 6 overall pick keeps playing like this. In the 23-17 win over the Jaguars, he threw for 202 yards and a touchdown. Jones set a career high with 107 yards on the ground and added another score.

Jones became the first player in Giants history with 200 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in a game and was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for it. He is one of three quarterbacks with at least 200 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in a game this season, joining Heisman Trophy winners Murray and Lamar Jackson (twice). Jones also hasn't thrown a pick in four straight games.

First-year coach Brian Daboll is a miracle-worker and he's now the +250 second favorite for NFL Coach of the Year behind Nick Sirianni (+125) of the unbeaten Eagles. Running back Saquon Barkley remains the clear-cut -190 favorite for NFL Comeback Player of the Year with Seattle's Smith second at +350.

New York lost right tackle Evan Neal and left guard Ben Bredeson to injury against the Jaguars and both are expected to miss time. The team has added offensive lineman Nick Gates to the active roster. Gates broke his left fibula and tibia in Week 2 of last season, a gruesome injury that saw his leg facing in the wrong direction and put his career in jeopardy. He has played center and guard previously.

To make the playoffs, the Giants are now -300 favorites with No at +230. A 9-1 start is very doable with a win Sunday because New York's next two games are at home against Houston and Detroit.
