Fantasy Football 2023: Five coaching changes with the biggest impact, including Sean Payton in Denver

NFL and Fantasy expert Dan Schneier highlights the five most impactful NFL coaching changes.

There are plenty of factors to consider when projecting the Fantasy Football outlook of individual players and offenses as a whole, but one that never gets enough attention is coaching. Offensive coordinators and head coaches develop a system and are responsible for calling the right plays in a wide array of situations, which greatly impacts the Fantasy Football game we play. Coaching changes play the biggest factor in an altered Fantasy landscape.

The 2022 New York Giants are a great example of what we're talking about, though they're not the only example. Brian Daboll took over as head coach in 2022 and he hired outside of his circle when he brought over Mike Kafka from the Chiefs to coordinate the offense. You could see wrinkles of what Kafka brought specifically in the red zone, where the Giants jumped from bottom-three to a top-10 red zone offense in just one season. Daboll's route concepts, personnel groupings, stacked/bunch formations and designed quarterback runs rebirthed the offense as a whole. As a result, Daniel Jones had his most productive Fantasy season by far since his rookie year and the same was true for Saquon Barkley.

The Dolphins also experienced a similar rejuvenation under Mike McDaniel, who transformed Tua Tagovailoa from a Fantasy afterthought to a league-winner prior to his injury.

Before you set your 2022 Fantasy football rankings, you need to see what NFL and Fantasy expert Dan Schneier has to say about this year's coaching changes.

Schneier has been working in the Fantasy Sports industry for more than a decade after getting his start with Pro Football Focus Fantasy. After a stint with FOX Sports, he now helps to lead editorial for CBS Sports Fantasy. He also runs a podcast breaking down NFL game film on a weekly basis in-season, which helps him see the game from a different Xs and Os perspective. He loves providing that schematic-based advice in the Fantasy sphere to offer a different way to approach, plan for and attack the game.

This year, Schneier believes the Broncos made a great trade to acquire Sean Payton and rebuild the Russell Wilson-led Denver offense. "Payton is the perfect fit to revive Wilson as he's already mastered the art of designing an offense around an undersized quarterback with Drew Brees. Payton will simplify things for Wilson, maximize the throws he is best at, and create 'lay up' throw opportunities for Wilson to his running backs and tight ends. The supporting cast already in place with three talented receivers, two talented backs and second-year tight end Greg Dulcich combine play a key factor as well. Wilson is one of the best pure values at the quarterback position and he has an excellent chance to finish just inside the top 12 at the position if he can stay healthy."

Not every coaching change is a positive though. White has identified one new coach who could struggle to get his offense in place out the gate. You NEED to see who it is before you draft.

So how will the arrival of Aaron Rodgers galvanize the Jets' offense for Fantasy purposes? And which other players with new homes will leap up the Fantasy leaderboard? ... Join SportsLine here to see Dan Schneier's analysis, and access even more Fantasy expertise!
