Eagles' Dallas Goedert 2023 NFL props: Longshot odds for historic 1,000-yard receiving trio with A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith
Could the Eagles have three players with 1,000-yard receiving seasons?
Only five teams in NFL history have had three players with at least 1,000 receiving yards in the same season, the most recent being the 2008 Arizona Cardinals. Yet Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl tight end Dallas Goedert believes the reigning NFC champions will be the sixth in 2023 if he can get to four digits. Alas, Goedert is set at "only" over/under 675.5 yards at DraftKings.
The Philadelphia offense blew up last year after the team traded for Titans receiver A.J. Brown at the 2022 draft. Brown had a career year with 88 catches for 1,496 yards (a franchise record) and 11 touchdowns, while fellow receiver and former Heisman winner DeVonta Smith was no slouch with 95 catches (franchise record) for 1,196 yards and seven scores.
It was the first time the Eagles ever had two players post at least 1,000 receiving yards. No Eagles tight end has reached 1,000 yards since Zach Ertz (now with Arizona) did so in 2018. The only other tight end in team history to reach 1,000 was Pete Retzlaff with 1,190 yards in 1965. Goedert might have made it last year but missed five games. He still had 55 catches for 702 yards and three scores. His 58.5 yards per game projected him to reach 995 receiving yards had he not missed time.
Since 2019, Goedert's 2,663 yards receiving are No. 5 among all tight ends in his 53 games. Travis Kelce leads by a mile with 5,108 in 64 games.
"I want to get past that 1,000 yards this year," Goedert said last week on a Philly radio show. "It's been a goal of mine for a long time and I've been falling just a little bit short. Hopefully I can stay healthy, play a whole year and break that. Hopefully I have 100 catches and hopefully this year me, Smitty [DeVonta Smith], and AJ [Brown] can all surpass that 1,000 yards. That'd be pretty cool."
Here are available props on Goedert at DraftKings:
- O/U 675.5 receiving yards: Over -130 favorite
- O/U 3.5 receiving TDs: Over -130 favorite
- O/U 57.5 receptions: Both -110
- Goedert at least 750 yards, and Brown and Smith both at least 1,250: +1500, yes-only
Individually, Brown is set at O/U 1,050 yards this year, with Smith at 975.5. It's obviously going to be tough for Goedert to reach 1,000 yards because there's only so many opportunities to go around. Philly also traded for an excellent receiving tailback in D'Andre Swift from Detroit. In addition, it's not as if the Eagles are all of a sudden going to become the most pass-happy team in the league under new offensive coordinator Brian Johnson. He was promoted from QBs coach to replace former OC Shane Steichen, the new head coach in Indianapolis.
The only team to have a tight end as part of a 1,000-yard trio was the 1980 San Diego Chargers with future Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow alongside receivers John Jefferson and Charlie Joiner. The other trios are from the 1989 Redskins (Art Monk, Ricky Sanders, Gary Clark); 1995 Falcons (Eric Metcalf, Terance Mathis and Bert Emanuel); 2004 Colts (Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Brandon Stokley); and the 2008 Cardinals (Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston).
Philadelphia is currently -5 for Week 1 at New England and the SportsLine Projection Model has Goedert finishing with 3.9 catches for 48 yards and 0.24 TDs.Â
