Dolphins vs. Bears NFL Week 9 odds: Bradley Chubb, Chase Claypool likely to make debuts with new teams Sunday
The Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears both made big trades on Tuesday. They'll go head-to-head Sunday.
It's a busier than usual NFL Trade Deadline on Tuesday. Two of the biggest names to change teams were Broncos pass-rusher Bradley Chubb, a 2020 Pro Bowler, landing in Miami and Steelers receiver Chase Claypool going to Chicago. Presumably, they will debut with their new teams Sunday when the Dolphins visit the Bears as 5-point favorites at Caesars Sportsbook.
Chicago had arguably the worst group of pass-catchers in the league, so Claypool was certainly needed – the move cost a 2023 second-round pick – but it's still a bit of a head-scratching trade because the Bears aren't really trying to win this season, as evidenced by new GM Ryan Poles trading two of the team's best defensive players in recent days in Robert Quinn and Roquan Smith.
Claypool, who starred collegiately at Notre Dame, looked like a future star after a rookie season in which he had 62 catches for 873 yards and nine scores, but he really hasn't performed at that level since. He has 32 catches for 311 yards and a touchdown this year, but Pittsburgh's middling quarterback play hasn't helped him. He has one year left on his contract after this season. Reportedly, the Packers were heavy after Claypool.Â
Miami is aiming for a Super Bowl this season and landed Chubb from Denver for the 49ers' 2023 first-round draft pick, the Dolphins' 2024 fourth-round pick and running back Chase Edmonds. The Dolphins received Chubb and the Broncos' 2025 fifth-round pick. Miami got that San Francisco first-rounder when the Niners traded up for Trey Lance in the 2021 draft.
Chubb, the No. 5 overall pick in 2018, had 26 tackles, 5.5 sacks and two forced fumbles this year. He's in the fifth and final season of his five-year rookie contract, but the Dolphins are expected to work out a new long-term deal. Miami is near the bottom of the league with 15 sacks. Â
The SportsLine Projection Model improves the Dolphins from 9.1 wins to 9.4 with this trade but still gives them just a 1.1% chance of winning the Super Bowl. The Broncos drop from 6.9 wins to 6.6. The Claypool trade didn't have a major impact on the Bears.Â
