Dodgers vs. Padres Monday MLB injury report, odds: Los Angeles regular-season betting underdog first time in nearly 2 years; Fernando Tatis Jr. expected to play

The Dodgers are very rare betting underdogs for Monday night's game at rival San Diego.

How dominant have the Los Angeles Dodgers been the past couple of seasons? To open a series at bitter rival San Diego on Monday night, Los Angeles is priced +115 on the William Hill Sportsbook moneyline odds. That marks the first time the Dodgers are regular-season underdogs since Sept. 14, 2019, when they were +132 at the New York Mets. It's Julio Urias on the mound Monday vs. Yu Darvish in a terrific pitching matchup. Padres star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. is expected to play after sitting out Sunday with a shoulder issue.

That Sept. 14 game had the Dodgers facing Mets ace and Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom, and New York won 3-0, although deGrom didn't get the decision – he's pitching tonight against Atlanta, incidentally. Los Angeles was a playoff underdog once since then as well, coming on Oct. 7, 2019, in Game 4 of the NLDS at the Washington Nationals, who were starting their ace and Cy Young winner Max Scherzer. The Nats won that game 6-1. In 2020, the Dodgers were not underdogs once through 78 regular-season or playoff games.

Moneylines will vary by sportsbooks and some did list Los Angeles as a very slight underdog April 30 this year in Milwaukee when the Dodgers had to give Edwin Uceta his MLB debut on the mound vs. the Brewers' Freddy Peralta. Milwaukee won that game 3-1, but the consensus is that Monday is the first time L.A. is a regular-season dog since that September 2019 matchup against deGrom (a lot of books had that April 30 game as a pick'em).

Darvish (6-2, 2.57) has been terrific against the Dodgers this season with a 1.29 ERA and .111 opponents' batting average against in two starts (he's 1-1 in them). L.A. also remains without three lineup regulars in former NL Rookie of the Year/World Series MVP Corey Seager, ex-NL MVP Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy – although those latter two could be activated Tuesday.

It's lefty Julio Urias (9-2, 3.54) for the Dodgers, and San Diego has won its past six at home vs. southpaws. Urias has not faced the Friars this year. Tatis is 0-for-4 career off him. He left Saturday's game vs. the Reds as a precautionary measure after re-injuring his shoulder on a diving attempt in the field and was held out of the lineup Sunday but should be in there tonight.

Tatis is second in the majors with 22 homers and a +220 second favorite to win NL MVP at William Hill. He is a +225 favorite among all players to homer in this game.
