Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers Thursday MLB probable pitchers, odds: Sportsbook exposed on Arizona's Zac Gallen for 2023 NL Cy Young

Bettors have been backing Arizona's Zac Gallen to win the 2023 NL Cy Young.

Two Arizona Diamondbacks history have won the NL Cy Young: Hall of Famer Randy Johnson in four straight seasons starting in 1999 and Brandon Webb in 2006. Could right-hander Zac Gallen join them this year? Bettors at BetMGM apparently think it's possible, as no pitcher has taken more action than Gallen (+1400) to win the award at the sportsbook. He's on the mound tonight as the Diamondbacks visit the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Arizona is a rising team thanks to a very good rotation led by the 27-year-old Gallen. Last season, he made a career-high 31 starts and was 12-4 with a 2.54 ERA, a 0.91 WHIP and 192 strikeouts in 184 innings – good for a Wins Above Replacement of 5.1. That was 35th best in the majors.

Gallen was named NL Pitcher of the Month for August, going 5-0 with an MLB-best 0.68 ERA, including a 34.1-inning scoreless streak. He eventually stretched that to a club-record 44.1 innings, breaking Webb's mark of 42.0 set in 2007. Gallen's streak was the longest since Zack Greinke's 45.2-inning scoreless stretch in 2015 and third longest since 1988. Gallen also set a Diamondbacks record for lowest opponent average (.186), breaking Johnson's previous mark of .197 set in 2004. Finally, Gallen's 0.91 WHIP was second to only Johnson's 0.90 ledger in 2004.

Against the Dodgers in 2022, Gallen didn't get a decision in 14.0 innings with a 0.64 ERA and only four hits allowed with 18 strikeouts. In his final spring start this year, Gallen was roughed up for five runs in five innings vs. the Reds.

BetMGM also is exposed on Arizona outfielder Corbin Carroll at +400 to win NL Rookie of the Year as no player has taken more action. The team already has signed him to an eight-year, $111 million contract extension even though he's played in only 32 major-league games. He hit .260 with four homers and 14 RBI. There may not be a faster player in the majors than Carroll, who had 52 steals in 142 career minor-league games and two at the MLB level.

Opposite Gallen tonight is Dodgers lefty Julio Urias. Future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw had started the opener in nine of the past 12 years but Urias is clearly the better pitcher nowadays. It's his first Opening Day start. Urias had his best season in the majors last year, when he went 17-7 with a National League-best 2.16 ERA to finish third in Cy Young Award voting.
