Denver Broncos Week 1 starting QB odds update: Drew Lock vs. Teddy Bridgewater winner likely announced after Saturday's game vs. Seahawks
One of the NFL's starting QB battles could be finalized this weekend.
It's quite possible that Denver Broncos coach Vic Fangio – who is on a major hot seat entering the season – names his starting quarterback winner between incumbent Drew Lock and trade acquisition Teddy Bridgewater as soon as Sunday depending on what happens in Denver's Week 2 preseason game in Seattle on Saturday night. SportsLine offers updated NFL odds on whether Lock or Bridgewater starts Week 1 of the regular season.
Back when Bridgewater was acquired on the eve of the draft for a sixth-round pick, he was the betting favorite to win the job … because why else deal for him? Lock tied for the NFL lead with 15 picks last year in just 13 games and his completion percentage of 57.3 was the worst among qualified quarterbacks. Bridgewater, by comparison, completed 69.1 percent in 2020 for the Panthers and had 11 picks in 15 games. His floor is higher, but Lock's ceiling is.
Reportedly, Fangio will name someone no later than Monday as he will want to give his starter all the first-team reps going forward because he may not play regulars in the preseason finale.
By all accounts from those who cover the Broncos, the job is Lock's to lose entering Saturday's game. In Denver's 33-6 win at Minnesota in the exhibition opener, he was 5-for-7 for 151 yards with two touchdowns and a 153.3 rating in three possessions as the starter. Bridgewater was pretty good, too, completing 7 for 9 for 74 yards and a TD for a rating of 144.8. He will start Saturday. Lock, though, has operated with the first string for the majority of training camp.
"Pretty damn close," Fangio said this week about deciding on his regular-season starter, "but we've got more information coming."
Denver opens the regular season currently as a 1-point favorite at Caesars Sportsbook at the New York Giants. While sportsbooks have Over/Under passing yardage and TD totals for most teams' quarterbacks on the board, they don't for Denver and won't until a starter is named. Caesars does have Lock at +2500 to lead the NFL in picks again. Bridgewater is +4000.
