Cowboys 2023 Thanksgiving NFL game odds: Dallas favored to host Aaron Rodgers & New York Jets on holiday

The 2023 NFL schedule will be released on Thursday.

The NFL will release the full 2023 schedule on Thursday night, although Football Morning in America columnist Peter King said earlier this week that it was still fluid as of Monday with some of the marquee matchups not set in stone. Speaking of marquee matchups, there is no bigger window in the annual schedule than the mid-afternoon Thanksgiving game hosted by the Dallas Cowboys, and SportsLine offers odds on which team will be the opponent.

Last year, the Cowboys hosted the New York Giants on the holiday and the game drew a stunning 42 million viewers on Fox Sports, the most-watched regular-season game in league history on any network. The figure, which also included streaming viewership, eclipsed the previous high of 41.6 million, a figure set by the December 1990 Monday night matchup between the Giants and San Francisco 49ers.

All NFC teams have eight home games this year (the AFC gets nine) and it's highly unlikely the NFL would schedule a Giants-Cowboys rematch for the holiday. But how about the Jets and Aaron Rodgers? That would keep the New York market involved and add one of the NFL's biggest stars to the showcase. Then again, the league could have Rodgers make his Jets debut in Week 1 in Dallas on a Sunday or Monday night.

The Jets haven't played on Thanksgiving since losing 49-19 in 2012 to New England in the infamous Mark Sanchez butt-fumble game.

In addition to the three NFC East teams, the Cowboys also will host the Rams, Seahawks, Patriots and Lions this season, and the Detroit can't be the Thanksgiving opponent because it always hosts the first game on the holiday. The league generally doesn't put West Coast teams in this game, although the Raiders played in Dallas in 2021. The Rams haven't played on the holiday since 1975, the longest drought of any team. The Seahawks last did so in 2014.

Philadelphia-Dallas would be a ratings bonanza, but Fox figures to fight hard to keep those two regular-season games. The Giants are highly unlikely to play in the game in back-to-back years. The Commanders aren't any expected to be any good, so they shouldn't be an option.

New England played in the prime-time game in 2022, losing at Minnesota, but the league also had New Orleans play in the prime-time holiday game in back-to-back years. Buffalo also played on the holiday in both 2021 (prime time) and last year (in Detroit).

Starting this year, teams can be on "Thursday Night Football" twice in a season, which includes the Turkey Day prime-time matchup, and not every team is guaranteed to play in prime time.
