2022 PGA Championship odds, props: American favored to win for seventh straight year, winning total set 275.5 strokes
Americans have won the PGA Championship the past six years and that trend is favored to continue.
In 2015 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, Aussie Jason Day won his first PGA Championship, and it was the third time in four years that a player from outside the United States captured the Grand Slam event. However, American players have won the past six, and DraftKings lists a player from the USA winning the Wanamaker Trophy from Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla., on Sunday as a -165 favorite with a European player at +260 and rest of the world at +350.
The PGA Championship debuted in 1916 as match-play event and switched to stroke play starting in 1958. U.S. players have won the tournament 85 times, with 59 different players accounting for those – Walter Hagen (match play) and Jack Nicklaus (stroke play) lead the way with five each. Reigning Masters champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the +1100 tournament favorite this week and +600 leader as the top American.
From individual countries, Australia accounts for the second-most with five PGA Championship victories, and players like Cameron Smith (+2200 this week), Day (+8000) and Adam Scott (+8000) would fall under rest-of-the-world.
Smith is the +550 favorite at Caesars Sportsbook to be the top rest-of-the-world finisher, followed by Japan's Hideki Matsuyama at +650. Of course, Matsuyama won the 2021 Masters and is +2200 to win this week. The only player from Asia to win the PGA Championship was South Korea's YE Yang in 2009 when he outdueled Tiger Woods.
No other country has more than two PGA Championship wins to its credit. Both of England's came courtesy of Jim Barnes in 1916 & '19. That's hard to believe. Matthew Fitzpatrick is the +225 favorite to be the top Englishman this week and is +3500 to win his first major.
The favored margin of victory is one shot at +250 with a playoff at +300. There hasn't been a one-shot win in the tournament since Jimmy Walker edged Day in 2016. The past five tournaments, oddly enough, have been decided by two shots. That pays +350. The most recent playoff was in 2011, when Keegan Bradley beat Jason Dufner.
The PGA Championship employs a three-hole aggregate playoff. Players would play holes 13, 17 and 18 in that order. If there's still no outright winner after that, the format moves to sudden death, starting with the same hole rotation.
The Over/Under for winning tournament score at the par-70 Southern Hills Country Club is 275.5, with the Under a -140 favorite. When Southern Hills last hosted in 2007, Tiger won at 8-under 272. It is considered an extremely tough course. That the winner is in the final pairing on Sunday is yes-only at -250. That he's not is +175.Â
