2022 MLB futures odds: Mets now favored to win more regular-season games than slumping Yankees

Caesars Sportsbook has a Mets-Yankees win total special posted.

When the New York Yankees were 61-23 on July 8 after a win over the rival Red Sox, many baseball experts were speculating whether the Bombers would break the MLB single-season wins record of 116. That's no longer a concern as the Yankees have stumbled big time since the All-Star break and are now not even favored to have the most wins in their own city. Caesars Sportsbook lists both the Mets and Yankees at pick'em to have the most wins, but the team from Queens is priced -210 and the one in the Bronx at +170.

Following Monday's 4-0 home loss with ace Gerrit Cole on the mound, the Yankees are just 8-16 since the break to fall to 72-44 overall. It was New York's second straight shutout loss, the first time the team had been held without a run in back-to-back games since Sept. 22-24, 2016. There's no question manager Aaron Boone's team misses the injured Giancarlo Stanton, who has been out since late July with left Achilles tendinitis. The former NL MVP went through a full workout Monday at Yankee Stadium and could be close to a rehab assignment.

The Yankees' remaining schedule only includes four series against teams that are locks to finish with losing records. They play four games in Oakland from Aug. 26-29, three at the Angels from Aug. 29-31, two vs. Pittsburgh from Sept. 20-21, and four at Texas from Oct. 3-5 to close things out.

The Mets have the second-best record in the majors at 75-41. Only the memorable 1986 (76-40) team posted a better record through the first 116 games of the season. The Mets are 17-6 since the break, the second-most wins in the majors. They're outscoring teams 116-78 in that span and lead MLB in batting average and OBP.

While the Yankees' rotation now is a bit of a question mark with Jordan Montgomery traded and Luis Severino hurt, the Mets have the best 1-2 punch around in a finally healthy Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer.

The Mets' schedule is much easier the rest of the way with several series against non-playoff contenders: four vs. Colorado from Aug. 25-28, three vs. Washington from Sept. 2-4, three at Pittsburgh from Sept. 5-7, three at Miami from Sept. 9-11, three vs. the Cubs from Sept. 12-14, four vs. Pittsburgh from Sept. 15-18, three at Oakland from Sept. 23-25, two vs. Miami from Sept. 27-28, and three vs. Washington from Oct. 3-5.

The Yankees host the Mets for two games on Aug. 22-23 to wrap up the regular-season Subway Series. On the Caesars World Series exacta odds, the Mets beating the Yankees is +1400. The Yankees beating the Mets carries the same odds.
