2022 French Open tennis odds: Iga Swiatek new betting favorite after shocking retirement of world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty

The world's top-ranked women's tennis player has called it quits at age 25.

There was shocking news from the tennis world overnight USA time as Aussie and women's world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty has decided to retire immediately at age 25 and less than two months after winning the Australian Open for her third career Grand Slam singles title. Barty's retirement has shaken up the futures odds around the sport, with world No. 2 Iga Swiatek the new +300 betting favorite to win the 2022 French Open, which is the next major on the schedule in late May.

"I'm so happy, and I'm so ready. I just know at the moment, in my heart, for me as a person, this is right," Barty said during a six-minute video posted on her Instagram account. "I don't have the physical drive, the emotional want and everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top of the level any more. I am spent."

That Barty won the Australian Open in her native country for the first time back in January played a role as she was presented with her trophy by seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Evonne Goolagong Cawley, her mentor and Indigenous and Australian tennis icon. Barty, the tournament's first home champion since 1978, hasn't played since. She was 11-0 in matches this season and had spent the past 114 weeks at No. 1.

"There was just a little part of me that wasn't quite satisfied, wasn't quite fulfilled. And then came the challenge of the Australian Open. I think that for me just feels like the most perfect way, my perfect way, to celebrate what an amazing journey my tennis career has been," Barty said.

Barty is the defending champion at Wimbledon and won the 2019 French Open. Her best result at the U.S. Open was reaching the Round of 16 twice. Only one other woman has walked away from tennis atop the WTA rankings. Justine Henin was No. 1 when she retired in May 2008 and also age 25. She eventually came back.

It's not the first time Barty has retired from tennis; she left the game in 2014 to pursue another Australian athletic pastime, cricket. She professionally for the Brisbane Heat in the Women's Big Bash League. Barty also took an 11-month break from the tour at the onset of the pandemic, remaining in Australia instead of traveling to tournaments abroad. If it's truly over, Barty finishes her career with 15 singles titles and a match record of 305 wins and 102 losses.

Poland's Swiatek won the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Calif., on Sunday and rose to a career-high No. 2 in the rankings Monday and is playing in the Miami Open this week. Swiatek has five career titles, including the 2020 French Open (lost in the 2021 quarters). She's 5-0 in her last five finals, losing only a combined 16 games.

Swiatek is not favored to win Wimbledon or the US Open, however. That would be world No. 77 Naomi Osaka even though she has struggled so far in 2022. Osaka is a two-time champion of the U.S. Open but hasn't played Wimbledon since 2019 and hasn't been past the Round of 32 on the grass in London.
