2022 Big Ten Tournament basketball odds: Injury suffered by Wisconsin's Johnny Davis injury looms large; Purdue betting favorite for event
Will Wisconsin have star Johnny Davis for this week's Big Ten Tournament?
The Wisconsin Badgers had a chance Sunday to earn the solo Big Ten regular-season title and the top seed in the conference tournament, but they were stunned at home by Nebraska – which was playing without its leading scorer – and saw potential National Player of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year Johnny Davis go down injured on a flagrant foul. His status looms large over this week's Big Ten Tournament from Indianapolis. Wisconsin is a +700 fourth favorite at Caesars Sportsbook.
In the 74-73 loss to the Huskers – that defeat and Illinois' comeback win over Iowa gave the Illini the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament -- Davis was hurt when he was fouled on a layup try by Trey McGowens with 17:32 left in the second half. Davis went to the locker room and didn't return to the bench, and the Badgers said he was out with a lower body injury. The sophomore guard averages 20.0 points and 8.1 rebounds this season and leads Division I in averaging 24.1 ppg and 8.5 rpg vs. AP Top-25 teams. Davis had 10 points and four rebounds in 11 minutes Sunday; McGowens was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected.
The good news for UW is that it has a double-bye in the Big Ten Tournament and won't play its first game until Friday against either No. 7 Michigan State or No. 10 Maryland, so the team is optimistic Davis will be ready then. He also has been dealing with a right ankle injury and was wearing a walking boot on his right foot after the loss to Nebraska.
Big Ten honors will be announced this week and Davis has a good chance of being named the conference's player of the year. He looks to become the eighth Badger and the first since Frank Kaminsky (2015) to win Big Ten Player of the Year. The Badgers are 12-2 away from home, including a mark of 9-2 in true road games -- both win totals are No. 1 among major conference teams. Away records are vitally important now. UW hasn't won the Big Ten Tournament since 2015.
Third-seeded Purdue is the +200 favorite for the Big Ten Tournament followed by No. 1 Illinois (+350) and No. 5 Iowa (+350). The Illini are defending tournament champions.
The biggest NCAA Tournament "bubble" game in this event is clearly No. 9 seed Indiana vs. No. 8 Michigan on Thursday morning. The loser may not get an at-large bid to the Big Dance – Indiana almost surely won't if it loses. Michigan still might.
