2021 NFL Draft odds: Analyst Chris Simms ranks Kellen Mond as fourth-best quarterback prospect, ahead of Justin Fields, Trey Lance

Justin Fields is the fifth-best quarterback prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft? One analyst thinks so.

Chris Simms had a nice career as a quarterback at the University of Texas and managed to play five seasons in the NFL, although Phil's son never made a mark at the pro level as a career backup with three teams. Simms is now with NBC Sports, and he certainly knows more about football than I do, but "Chris Simms," "Justin Fields" and "Kellen Mond" are trending on Twitter right now because Simms released his 2021 NFL Draft QB rankings today and somehow ranked Texas A&M's Kellen Mond as the No. 4 overall QB prospect with Justin Fields at No. 5 and Trey Lance sixth.

Simms' No. 1 quarterback is BYU's Zach Wilson with Clemson's Trevor Lawrence at No. 2 even though nearly every scout believes Lawrence is the best prospect at the position to enter the NFL since Andrew Luck. Lawrence is an absolute lock to be the first overall pick by Jacksonville in late April.

Wilson could go No. 2 to the Jets, and William Hill Sportsbook lists Wilson as the -400 favorite to be the No. 2 overall pick no matter which team selects there – i.e., it could be Houston if the Jets trade that pick in any Deshaun Watson deal. The CBS Sports Big Board ranks Wilson as the No. 2 quarterback and No. 4 overall prospect.

Alabama's Mac Jones is third on Simms' list, followed by the Aggies' Mond, Ohio State's Fields and North Dakota State's Lance. Fields is the +375 second favorite to be the second overall pick. There's also a Fields vs. Lance prop with Fields as a -600 favorite to be picked ahead of Lance (+450). Wilson is a -440 favorite to go before Fields (+360).

Fields is the No. 3 QB and sixth overall prospect on the CBS Sports Big Board, while Lance is the No. 4 QB and 13th prospect, Jones ranked as the No. 5 QB and 23rd prospect, and Mond way down as the No. 134 overall prospect and given no shot of being a first-round pick.

That said, Mond's stock may be on the rise after he was the MVP of the Senior Bowl. Mond, who was playing for the American team, was 13-for-25 and threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns in the 27-24 losing effort against the National team. He also converted on a two-point conversion.

Mond finished his career holding nearly every Texas A&M quarterback record and ranked seventh in SEC history in career total offense (11,269 yards), 10th in total touchdowns and 11th in passing yards (11,269).

There is currently one former Texas A&M quarterback -- player who finished his NCAA career there, so not counting the likes of Kyler Murray or Kyle Allen -- in the NFL: The Titans' Ryan Tannehill. He was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2012 draft by the Dolphins. Mond broke nearly all of Johnny Manziel's records at A&M and Manziel was the No. 22 overall pick in the 2014 draft by the Browns but busted out of the league.
