2020 NFL Draft: Redskins spurn trade offers, take Chase Young second overall

Nearly every scout had Ohio State defensive end Chase Young as the top-rated player in the 2020 NFL Draft, and the Washington Redskins pounced on him at No. 2 Thursday in the NFL Draft.

As expected, Ohio State defensive end Chase Young was picked No. 2 overall by the Washington Redskins in Round 1 of the 2020 NFL Draft on Thursday. They were the -2000 favorites at William Hill to be the team that selected Young, who was also -2000 to be the second overall choice. (Those didn't necessarily have to be the same thing.)

Young is the fifth player and first since Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh (No. 2 in 2010 to Lions) to win the Bednarik Trophy (best defensive player in college football) and be picked in the top five in the following year's draft since 1995. The others were Julius Peppers (No. 2 in 2002 to Panthers), LaVar Arrington (No. 2 in 2000 to Redskins) and Charles Woodson (No. 4 to Raiders in 1998). Woodson and Peppers will end up in Canton. Suh is currently with the Tampa Bay Bucs.

A defensive end has now been selected with a top-five pick in five consecutive drafts. Young is the third Ohio State one, joining Nick Bosa (No. 2 last year to Niners) and Joey Bosa (No. 3 in 2016 to Chargers). The brothers both won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, and Young is going to be favored as well. Young, the two Bosas and Dan Wilkinson (No. 1 in 1994 to Bengals) are the only defensive linemen ever from Ohio State to be selected in the first three picks of an NFL Draft in the common draft era.

Ohio State is the first school to have a defensive player selected in the top five in three consecutive NFL Drafts in the common draft era.
